If this sounds anything like the
Benchmark HPA4 Headphone / Line Amplifier, (at
$ 2,995.00) ,
Then it would be better than most amps.
The Benchmark is one of the most resolving SS amps I ever heard (extensively) period.
Both use the THX AAA technology, but there's only so much you can do component wise with a $350 price tag. I would still expect the HPA4 to perform much better. You'll get a better pot and caps and that's just the beginning.
That being said, I'll bet this knocks everything for less than $1k out of the water.
The 789 is incredible value.
That said, the HPA4 price tag and performance are a step above. A large amount of budget there goes towards its relay-switched-R-ladder volume control, its touchscreen display, the upgraded components needed for the 888 topology, and the "Made In USA" cred.
"but how could it at 10x less price? pls keep enjoying your expensive amp!" :)
Yes, better pot and caps, I don't expect HPA4 to come with a gain switch that doesn't line up properly, but sound wise, I doubt anyone will hear any difference when blind tested.
That's because blind tests are crap. I have said it before and I will say it again: Trying to make subjective experience into objective data is asinine. Even when the subjective experience is coming from a blind source.
If you take a person out of their typical listening environment to wherever your blind test is set up, their ability to simply relax and critically listen suddenly vanishes. You put a stranger behind a curtain in their typical listening environment and, miraculously, the same thing happens. There are far more variables than just the audio chain that are not controlled, and indeed, can't be. Hell, I have a hard time listening carefully when my wife is in the room and when my kids are still awake.
Here's the only rule in audio gear: If the difference in your experience is worth the difference in price, to you, it's worth spending the money on. It took me far too long a time to learn that.
Stop trying to tell other people what they are or are not hearing.
We dont care about that. We dont care whats goes inside the engineering process and circuitry board, specification level of TDP, distortion level and noise or watever, relay-switched-R-ladder volume control, its touchscreen display and other features. But rather how does it sounds and able to evaluate sound performance value for over $3000. How much better than the Drop 789 compare to the actual sound realism and spaciousness of the 888 tech.
How much times better than the Drop 789 and Monolith 788 ?
Ever heard how beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
Yes but we use ears not eyes. So what is your respond ?
I do understand your metaphor but am referrring to sound performance attributes. The rest of my statement was referring to sound attributes not aesthetics. So its probably is you who dont understand ???
Knowing how it is engineered does not tell you anything about how it sounds. Only your ears can do that. Listen to both and see if the difference in price is worth it to you.
Of course and agree (Sooo obvious). That is the problem when you dont get to try. Even if you so happen to try, everywhere is so noisy, you will only able to hear its true potential at your quiet home. Also, you need to compare directly side by side.
You can try things out in a stereo shop and they almost always have a well treated listening room. Not as good as home, but it works. They have limited selection though... I really wish there was an online retailer that offered in-home trials on gear so you can try before you buy instead of having to deal with return shipping until you find what you want.
That will never happen as online retailer wants quick buck and low cost. Also, stereo shop will depend on where you live
