Massdrop, I love you, but this is absolutely fucking ridiculous. I don't understand why anyone would actually join this drop given this absurdity. Waiting a month and a half for a DAC was manageable for me but waiting 6 MONTHS for this to even SHIP is actually broken. Especially for how much this beauty costs.

Check ot the wait for the balanced Grace SDAC... this seems speedy by comparison.

You must be new here. Massdrop is in the process of becoming "Kickstarter 2: More reliable, but still as slow". Instead of doing bulk orders, Massdrop wants people to focus on crowdfunding.
Some things are just too tempting to pass up, but the wait is real.

I think you are right, at least to an extent. They still have their original business model where they gather bulk buys for products from established vendors. These ship in a matter of weeks usually (though the wait can stretch for a couple of months).
Then there is their new model, where the 789 is an example (as is the much more delayed Grace balanced DAC). They develop themselves, co-develop with someone else, or contract out the design completely a brand new product. That's expensive and they could either fund it out of pocket, or, as it appears, they crowdfund that product.
Choice we have is to either play the game and pay and wait, or wait till more generally available.
I will add that they may be Kickstarter II for some new items, but as you note I expect they will stand behind those product deliveries, unlike Kickstarter. I have a few projects that I paid for there that went up in smoke with nothing to show for it, except my credit card bill. So just a tad bit unfair to compare them to Kickstarter too literally, but your point is nonetheless an important one for folks to keep in mind.
In the end, buy now and wait, don't buy, wait and see and buy later, the choice is yours!

I'm not saying that I have a problem with that in particular though. My issue is with how inconsistent they are with not only delivery times but also the kinds of products that they're selling. Not to mention how much room for improvement there is when it comes to how upfront and telling they are about these sorts of things.
