What short interconnects between a balanced DAC and this Amp would anyone recommend? Do XLR interconnects really make a difference here?
If you have DAC with XLR balanced output, then definitely use XLR cables. They eliminate chance of hum pickup in that segment of the audio chain.
The hum is caused by every element in the audio chain having propensity to inject or pickup common mode noise currents to some degree. Balanced cables keep these CM currents away from the wanted signal lines.
This effect, coupled with long signal runs, is why pro audio relies so heavily on XLR cables and balanced signals wherever possible.
