I'd like to hear your view on using one of the SE outputs as "line out" The bridged output are not useful for my setup, I do need volume control for my powered speakers. I do know it's not designed for this, but in gain level 2, unity, when plugged into the very high impedance of a line in, is it correct to assume that a 2V Dac output would still be line level, that there would not be "double amping" since very high impedance line in means no power means no current? Basically, if I do connect one of the 2 SE headphones output to my powered speakers, am i doing something wrong in term of sound quality?
Hi Pierre. The TRS SE outputs aren't fixed 2 V out... they're variable according to gain knob and vol control. If you use 2V DAC and set gain knob to "2" (0dB) then you'll have 0-2 V rms output from the TRS. And I strongly recommend using TRS cables with low impedance ground to minimize hum pickup in an unbalanced setup like that e.g. Monoprice 5576.
Thanks Andrew, yes of course it wouldn't be a fixed output, This is the Idea of having a volume control, but what I meanth was should I expect a normal behavior and no degrradation of sound quality when Using an amped output to plug in a line in or is it really better to use the SE Pass output and find something else to rely on for volume control. And if I do am I correct to use the gain setting #2 for that task. To my knowledge 0-2V is a proper preamp output, and in the case of a line in it has very high impedance so no current/no power. So basically the question is does the SE output "behave" like a line out when connected in a line in or does it create problems that I don't see/understand properly
Hi Pierre. Yes using the 789 TRS outputs (gain 2) as a preamp output will be super clean, low THD+N, and low impedance. To minimize ground hum pickup, use low-ground-impedance TRS cables throughout and plug all your audio devices into the same power strip. Assuming your powered monitors are 0-2V compatible, then I don't foresee any other problems.
