Really engaging amp, with plenty of power. The gain switch lets you use this with a clean background even with IEMs. I've used the TFZ Secret Garden, Noble X, Hifiman RE600s v2, Noble EDC Velvet, none of which had problems; no background sound, and all sounded pretty good. For full size headphones, I really enjoyed almost all of them. (Audeze LCD2C, EMU Teak, 1More triple driver over ear, Sennheiser 6xx, Sennheiser 58x, Fostex Tx0, Hifiman HE400i, Hifiman HE4xx, Audio Technica M40x) The amp is relatively neutral, and provides a sterile environment for you to really compare headphone drivers. I think it also provides a solid synergy with most of my headphones such that it's more enjoyable to listen to music on this amp than others in my stable: Aune X7s, Vali 1, Lake People G103, and I prefer this to the V200 I had. I think it really punches above its weight class for features and capability. My one minor gripe is that the socket for the headphone jacks feels odd. The 1/4" and 3.5mm have a weird gritty feel. They both work fine, but I feel a little extra friction when inserting headphone cables. Literally the one thing I can fault on this machine so far. Suppose I should add, used in the following chain: PC->Bifrost Multibit->Onkyo TX8255->THX AAA789 PS4->Astro Mixamp Pro->Onkyo TX8255->THX AAA789

So you'd say this is better than the Aune X7S? I have that paired with the Massdrop Grace SDAC.

I prefer it over the x7s, for a variety of reasons: 1: More power 2: The stage seems a bit bigger, both width and depth 3: The tuning is more pleasing to my ear 4: The background is quieter

More power than the X7S which has a "class A" amp? What do you mean that the background is quieter?

Class A doesn't directly correlate to power output, but refers to how the power is generated, and how much is wasted. Class A has about 50% efficiency, and the other 50% is usually converted to heat. The x7s should be about 1W balanced, and I think the 789 is... 3 or 6W balanced?

Quieter refers to noise or buzzing or hum you might hear in the background, a problem which amplifies with really efficient drivers, a la iems.

Hmm okay. Does this amp get warm to the touch? The X7S does but not excessively so.

Okay. So it's not an issue if I were to leave it on all the time? I tend to turn off my X7S if I go out of the house for work or whatnot. If there is one thing I don't like about the X7S is the power switch is on the back.

Not a problem for me, but this also has the benefit of the power switch being on the front

Hmm well $492 Canadian for this amp is quite a lot. Think it's worth it for that price?

Hard for me to say, as I'm not sure how the Canadian CPI compares to the US. The 789 was 1.75 times more than the x7s here in US. That was worth it to me.

It's not active right now but I think the Aune X7S was $199 US which would have been close to $300 CAD plus customs fee of possibly $30 or so. I actually bought mine used for $225 CAD.

Any further comments on the pairing with the EMU Teak, particularly the bass.
