Is it possible to connect powered monitors to this?

ClassifieduserNo there aren't any outputs on these. You would need an amp with additional outputs to do so. I have a similar issue and am planning to get an SMSL SU-8 with the THX so that I can use both powered monitors and headphones.

DisplayERR0RHi I am curious how you you will be hooking the SU-8 to powered monitor. Will it be RCAs out from the SU-8 to the speakers? While the XLRs out to your THX 789? That means sound will coming out from both headphones and speakers at the same time correct? Sorry I'm not that savvy when it comes to this

Rielso i have my SU-8 plugged via XLR to my KRK V8S4 powered monitors, then via RCA to my 789. now since RCA/XLR play at the same time i have a JBL nanopatch+ passive monitor controller between my monitors & the SU-8, meaning i can dim or mute the monitors. i have use the SE pass through on the 789 to a schiit magni so i can use the pre-amp for my SVS PC2000 subwoofer

Riel@Raths explained it best. I personally don't care for balanced headphones so will be using the XLR outs to my two Event 20/20bas v3's that will have a passive monitor controller between. Using the 789 for my Elex and HD6XX.

RathsI have the SB16-Ultra. I recently had to replace the amp (SVS awesome service!) and was literally going through bass withdrawals while waiting for it to arrive. I'd love to go dual like you are thinking. You can't go wrong with a pair of PC2000's.

RathsYour big Mackie big knob is not connected to the earlier setup which consists of the 789/SU-8 correct? Sorry real curious how you have yours setup. Because having a big knob connected to all that has definitely piqued my interest

RielNo i have the big knob studio which is separate just for my SM7B and a pair of listening Monitors. You can like in my past post swap out the JBL nanopatch+ for a Big knob passive as they are both Balanced passive Monitor controllers So instead of Monitors then JBL then SU-8, would go Monitors then Big knob passive then SU-8, Literally just means i can have my monitors on all the time and just mute when listening to headphones, then hit unmute if i want speakers. Also handy as a quick dim switch. I also have on the SE pass through on the 789 a Schiit magni since the 789 doesn't have a pre amp, using the pre-amp of the magni for my SVS subwoofer which is great as i can change the Subwoofer volume level from the magni & can also control from the SU-8 remote

RathsOkay I watched some videos and read some threads regarding the Big Knob. Is it possible to have the Big Knob Studio / + version replace the switch in my planned setup? I understand there will be some ports such as for the mic which will not be used. The idea of a giant knob and leds is serously cool though and would like to build my setup around it

RielNo the big knob studio is an audio interface/DAC its not a passive module. Big knob passive on the other hand is a passive Monitor controller that controls the volume/mute/dim/mono of a pair of studio Monitors. You can use the passive as a monitor switcher as you have 2 source selects. What are you ultimately wanting to do? If you want a switch use a Schiit SYS/little bear / Monitor switcher big knob passive Those HS5s gonna be balanced? since you're using RCA to XLR thats a no unless you're using XLR Cables with RCA adapters If they aren't balanced would be a better idea to use the RCAs from the SU-8 & add a passive monitor controller in between the SU-8 & Monitors so you can mute/unmute them in an instant because if you dont add one ovbs XLR/RCA play at the same time

RielDoesn't look very possible, like Raths said, it's active not passive, as in it does a lot more than just take input and direct it through a circuit output. What confuses me about your diagram is that by having the knob at the center of your setup you're controlling your monitors and headphone amps with it, which is basically carrying over the impractical nature of using the su-8's remote to control volume. It doesn't work as well as you'd think unfortunately as I have experienced going back and forth between volume controls. I understand what you want though, a single knob to control all audio outs is pretty nice in theory but is very difficult in practice (not loud enough then switching outs and blowing up headphones/waking up neighbours etc.) My recommendation is use the little bear, get a xlr y split to go to your amps and send the other xlr out to a passive controller, then to your monitors. Using the mani's out to your subwoofer would be the last logical step, although since the subwoofer is not controlled by monitor passthrough the controller would not affect the subwoofer's volume whatsoever. Give me a bit of time and I'l think about a fix. Also, xlr to rca works, rca to xlr does not. Just don't do it, there are various explanations online as to why.

EcchiWhaleYou can connect the Mackie big knob passive version instead of the studio / studio is an interface. The passive version is basically the same as the JBL nanopatch+ etc but can have 2 Monitor sources & also a mono button & is balanced same as the JBL but the JBL is one set. Only reason i went JBL one Zeos has one and two i already have the big knob studio for others

EcchiWhaleThe remote would still change the volume of the subwoofer lmao, it works for me perfectly. The SE pass through is literally just a audio passthrough so whatever the signal it passes it onto another amp/pre-amp so have the magni on and at full volume & then set whatever you want on the 789 & the remote still changes the volume since the DAC changes volume for everything. Hench needing a passive volume controller so that you can mute/unmute speakers when listening to headphones etc because XLR/RCA play at the same time but to also be able to dim/balance the audio out with the sub. Same with the magni you can if you want change the volume on the magni. I have ATM 2 x PC2000s subs & a pair of KRK V8S4 Monitors. Depending on what movie or music all depends on how much sub i want over speakers etc. But all in all you can set and forgot the knobs and just use the remote as its all entwined into one system. Also on the magni yiu have high/low gain so effectively you have so many audio level choices & ultimately you can set and forgot apart from the 789 knob which of course you use headphones with so depending on your headphones depends on volume etc BUT normally you wouldn't listen to speakers at same time & if you wanted like i do sometimes is hit unmute on the monitor controller & then use the knob to dim the audio a bit and dont even have the magni on. Ive done stuff like this for a long time in studios

RathsWould it? I think I'm looking at a different diagram in my head... SE passthrough is present on the knob too so I guess I'm being dumb. Anyway, as long as it works. Usually I leave my bass settings alone and only shut it on/off and have my monitors on +2dB low frequency to pick up the slack.

EcchiWhaleYeah lmao thats why its a passthrough also it depends what gear you have i guess. Having 2 x SVS PC 2000 subs and KRK v8s4 8" studio Monitors needs a bit of changing volume wise depending on what im doing. Movies/music. And on the Subs its only set to 80% like i love techo / acid techno vs something like pop the sub volumes need changing etc

EcchiWhaleAlso thats one of the best things about the setup the Monitors go into sleep mode & to unmute i hit unmute on the JBL & can turn off subs if i need too as these 8" KRK V8S4s pack some bass

EcchiWhaleSU-8 DAC to PC XLR from SU-8 to JBL controller (to mute/unmute as XLR & RCA play at same time) JBL controller to Monitors (still Balanced) RCA from SU-8 to the 789. 789 use as ovbs headphone amp 789 pass through to the magni Magni pre-amp is used for sub/Subwoofers I have the JBL controller maxed I have the magni maxed I only need to change the volume of the 789 for different headphones & when i use the subs (depends again on what im listening too) I use the SU-8 remote to Change volumes of the monitors & sub at the same time BUT i can still tweek the volume of the subs & monitors separately if i wanted. If i wanted more sub as well i could turn it up on the sub itself but with these subs i only have them at 80% on the back anymore & i will break stuff in the room. Also i can turn off the magni if i didnt want the subs or turn the magni volume all the way to 0. Same with Monitors i can dim the monitors using the JBL controller OR via the SU-8 remote. If im using headphones the JBL controller is muted / magni at 0. i set the 789 at a nice volume for the headphones im using and use the SU-8 remote to go up/down in volume from there. So i dont have to keep touching the 789 etc its just using the remote. Then if i want to listen to monitors / sub its easy as hitting unmute & turning the magni volume up. I used to have it as two systems and use voicemeter but that was awful. A full all in one setup is perfect. The pass through on the 789 is basically for another amp eg.. magni because the 789 doesn't have its own pre-amp so THX made it so you could add another amp/pre

RathsI'm not, I figured it out already. Neglected to understand that the knob would also control the bass because it would be routed through in SE. Anyway, I have my su-8's outs split, and with the rumored arrival of the 789 in may XLR will be split 3 ways. Not sure why you're using RCA for the 789 when XLR is right there. I'm not sure why you have the 789 connected to the magni either, wouldn't it be fine to go from su-8 ---> magni ---> SVS by RCA?
