I was in on the April Drop for the *Mass*Drop THX AAA 789.
It arrived this morning...
I have three things to let you guys know which are ranging from small to not a problem.
1. Volume Pot gets harder to turn at 65%-90% (not buttery smooth yet)
Volume pot seems to be getting better with use
2. 600 Ohm Beyerdynamic DT 990s get loud on SE @100mW, but no where near Emotiva A100 (350mW per ch)
3. Power button isn't satisfying when it clicks (everyone already mentioned this, and it isn't a big problem)
600 Ohm can be driven fine, I'm just used to being able to only get like to 2-3 o'clock and it starts distorting because of the amount of power that the Emotiva A100 provides without jumpers. (Jumpers installed gives 0.6mW PerCh @600 Ohms)
The clarity with IEMs reminded me of what it was like to get my first amp, just sheer power from the amp really livened up the bass on headphones I was using at the time that had a built-in amp, but you couldn't turn off NC. The bass was incredible and very well defined compared to using the built-in amp & NC. IEM were running balanced 2.5mm with RCA, as I haven't got a XLR Output DAC to use as of yet. Trying to summarize thoughts, Fostex T50RP Mk.III's sound really clear, less muddy, better sound-stage and well defined bass compared to the Emotiva... Very clinical and sterile, but I like this as it gives a similar feeling to the Tin P1 IEM.
So far everything I am throwing at it aligns up with what everyone else is saying, clean, clinical. wide and no coloration to the sound.
I am aware of diminishing returns when you upgrade the audio chain. This seems like a worthwhile buy, even more so if it'll be your first headphone amp. But the Atom is definitely one to consider if price and Single-Ended outputs only, are important.
Initial thoughts ... 4.7/5 ⭐
My volume pot is super buttery and smooth and has been like this since delivery day also from the same drop as yourself. Maybe a possible fault with yours as I have not seen mention of this elsewhere, unless you have.
I honestly dont don’t see any issue with the power button, sure it doesn’t click but it’s not supposed to, it doesn’t flop around and it isn’t mushy feeling like it’s not going to do anything. The spring is firm enough to feel resistance and confident in the press whilst not too firm that it’s hard to depress to activate the switch.
I have to agree with IEM’s It is fantastic, to the point that it seems made for IEM’s and there needs to be a more powerful version with twice the power for full sized headphones.
I love how active you are on here.
Yeah the volume pot seems to have smoothed itself out.
It went from being stiff around 75% to smooth all-round.
I think mine was a case of a fresh volume pot that hadn't been turned at all since factory, hence why it was rough at the start.
