Question
I plugged in a 4 pin xlr to 3.5mm adapter and after a few seconds it cut out and led went to red. Why? I think I've figured it out. The xlr to 3.5mm balanced adapter is a 3.5mm 4 pole. Using it with a regular 3.5mm cable seems to be the issue

TubeHead35You triggered short protection, you cannot convert an XLR/TRRS/TRRRS output to TRS, at best it trips protection, at worst you fry some gear. TRS out into adapters for the others are fine, not the other way round.

ElectronicVicesThanks, it took me about 60 seconds to realize that was what occurred. So, XLR can't go to 3.5mm trs? I thought there was an adapter for everything... 🙂

TubeHead35For models like the CTH where the XLR output is the exact same as the TRS output (internally) these adapters work. For a quasi-balanced or fully differential amp design it won't like being shorted. Unless you really need the power the XLR output of the 789 showed minimal/no differences between TRS and XLR outputs in my own experience.
