International users, I suppose you’ll be using an adaptor for the power supply. I wonder what effect this has on the SQ

  • Power supply: 30 VDC inline brick, universal input 100 – 240 VAC
If you mean the plug, it'll most assuredly have zero audible impact.

When switching from low to medium gain, there is an audible click within the chassis, is this normal?

Yes, that's the relay switching over. That's normal.

Can anyone recommend any good RCA to RCA cables that won't degrade the audio quality? I'm dumb and forgot I'd need some in order to connect this to my DAC. Thanks

It would take a phenomenally broken cable to degrade sound quality in an audible or even measurable manner. Buy nice ones for the looks if you so desire but don't fool yourself into thinking they'll sound better (at least not with this level of gear)

https://www.amazon.com/0-5-Foot-RCA-Cable-Pair/dp/B01ALMYOHQ/ Worlds best cable -> it's in the name so it must be true. I agree that you don't need high quality cables... but getting cables just long enough to connect your gear does help. Last time I looked I couldn't find short length cables at a fair price (~$1.00'ish). They're all like $15+. Maybe I'm just bad at using the internet. Did a search and saw these (lowest price I've seen for ~6inch long cables) for $10 https://www.amazon.com/CESS-075-6i-Heavy-Waterproof-Cable-Phono. They're also water proof! Hopefully they're flexible enough to use in a stack. Guess I'm still bad at the internet.

Hey man, you're linking the Linear 789 amp which is a balanced amplifier, this one is different.

Two questions. I’ve heard that the pre out and headphone out are never active at the same time- if this is the case, what’s the purpose of the Pre switch? My JDS atom outputs to headphones if they’re plugged in and via the pre if they’re not. I take it the ONE is the same, except you can turn off the pre fallback with that switch for some reason? The volume knob controls the pre outs, but is it affected by the gain stage setting or does that only apply to the headphone output? On the Atom, the low gain stage lowers the pre-out volume as well.

The Pre switch switches between headphone output and pre-amp output, so you don't have to unplug your headphones to use the pre-amp output. You just flip that switch and now you use pre-amp instead of headphones. The lack of a pre-amp switch is something that annoyed me about the Atom.

Nice! That’s actually quite a selling point, then!

So I’m not super clear on what makes a good amp, so… Would this be suitable for driving bookshelves or is it strictly for headphones?

It's a headphone amp that can additionally be used as a preamp to give say volume control on bookshelf speakers, but if you wanted a preamp to connect a turntable to your speakers, you'll still need to invest in a phono preamp. Bookshelf speakers are usually active, meaning they have built in amplifiers which are driven with a power chord that connects directly to a wall outlet, some even have built in pre-amps. TDLR; buy this if you need an affordable, neutral, headphone amp, the preamp is a value add that will benefit some people and bookshelf speakers.

私は日本に住んでいる日本人です。日本で使用する際に、何か注意が必要ですか? 電圧はコンセントの種類とは異なることは分かっていますが、実際に電圧の異なる電化製品を使用したことはありません。アドバイスをお願いします。

Cant really speak or type Japanese, but you should be good on the voltage.

It comes with a power brick that should make your power safe for the device.

Just be careful on the import fees, I've heard those can stack up quickly for anyone outside the USA

No balanced out? Better off with the previous version. Except its cheaper... not worth losing the balanced out in my opinion.

SE output is lower than the Heresy, but it has more gain stages, better measurements, and front toggles for power & pre amp. SE output in both is higher than the Magnius, which is Schiit's competition in this price range. Subjectively, I think the pot on this is significantly better than the one on the Magni 3 (base), which is likely to be similar to the Heresy or 3+. Schiit makes solid products, but they are known for scratchy pots and occasional channel imbalance in the low end, perhaps due to having such high gain and power in budget devices.

Well, the Magnius has a tacked on SE output, because it's meant to be a balanced amp primarily. I'm sure the pot on this is better. It's also $50-$100 more expensive. The 3+ and Heresy do have a less-than-amazing pot. As for the performance, I can't tell a difference between the Atom, Heresy or 789, and I doubt the One would change that, so it comes down to features in my opinion. If I was in the market I just don't know if I'd spend $150-$200 on this, personally.
