Stock tubes are bad
Now that I've put in 200 dollars of tubes over the year I've owned this the device itself seems to be dead. guess there's no longevity in this product, sounds warm and quite frankly phenomenal with my 660 hd2s but the stock tubes buzz so you have to in my opinion go up to the genalex russian tubes which are mad expensive. But again if the interface itself doesn't last as long as the good tubes why buy it? sorry this sucks, man.

**Update: Dead after a few days** Good deal. Headphone Matching is Critical.
**Belly up after 3 days—sad** I really like this unit. I had it sitting in my cart at $349 for a few days, then the price jumped to $399—so I pulled it. When it dropped to $299, it was an immediate buy. I own a high-end Cayin headphone amp that I love, but I wanted something lighter for my desktop setup. With low-impedance headphones, this amp sounds pretty flat. It’s clearly tuned for the 300-ohm sweet spot and shines with Sennheisers. It also does well with 600-ohm Beyerdynamics, though it struggles to drive them fully. This is a very specific purchase, so know what you’re buying. The value is excellent. I don’t use the internal DAC since I have a better external unit, but it sounded fine in my testing, and it's nice to have. I don’t hear the hum some people complain about (and it’s sitting right next to my PC). The stock tubes are good, though I’ll probably roll in different ones later.

Bottom line: if you want an OTL amp for 250-ohm+ headphones, this is a buy.

FatBeagleSrI’ve never had any issues with xduoo products, how was it dead after just a few days? To me this is a disingenuous review

cg547627DROP took it back with no issues, so I’ve got no beef with them. It’s just not one of the better xDuoo products from what I’ve seen and heard from others, and the lowered $299 price along with the lack of sell-through kind of confirm that. I did a 24-hour burn-in like I do with all my tube amps to quality-check and let the tubes settle a bit, but it shouldn’t have given up the ghost after three days. I own several tube amps, and they’re rock solid, especially the Cayin products. I also own other xDuoo gear on the solid-state side, and those have all been fine. This particular unit just doesn’t seem up to their usual standard, and my guess is there’s a transformer issue. I didn’t want to deal with ordering another, waiting again, and then risk it dying outside the warranty window. The Cayin headphone amp with impedance matching is far superior — twice the price, but absolutely worth it. I tried to get another one, but it sold out in minutes, and for good reason. I left the review because it’s my honest opinion, and reliability matters.

Dead after less than 2 years of use
The USB controller in my TA-84 no longer works and throws a USB error on whatever machine I plug it into using different cables and whatnot. Not very happy since I've had it for less than 2 years.

Good sound but destroyed by constant buzzing sound in my right headphone and USB issue
Great amp which sound great. I would have given it a 5 stars rating if there are no issues like constant buzzing sound on my right headphone and sometimes the amp has problem connecting signals via USB. I would have to switch it on and off many times or plug and unplug the USB cable till the amp recognize from the source. Very very frustrating. Strongly not recommended!

XDUOO TA-84 OTL
A great option for the HD800. Excellent value. Upgrade the stock DAC to tune your sound first.

Great tube rolling platform
These take EL84 and ECC-82 tubes, which are widely available and in current production. Likewise, for those who doesn't want to indulge in the crazy world of tube rolling, those Psvane tubes are good enough, albeit a bit spiky at the treble side.
Oh, and the volume knob is stepped, which I can't fine tune my preferred volume - it's either too loud or too quiet. Hate it.

hubert_cumberdaleThe volume knob issue happened to me whether I was using the internal dac or an external dac through the rca input.

Great device!
Its been a few days that I received my Ta-84 and I tested it on many different set ups thoroughly.
first off: as a standalone device I found it feel a little flat probably due to the analytical nature of the internal DAC that I personally dont like too much. If you plan on using it alone I would suggest a tube upgrade to something NOS.
together with a schiit asgard 3 that has a multibit DAC chip as preamp though, things change. It becomes way more dynamic and the soundstaging can shine. However I was lacking detail and clarity a little.
on my main chain, which is a Schiit Modius DAC, a Lokius EQ, Lyr+ with a sylvania NOS bad boy tube as Preamp and then to the TA-84 on stock tubes, I was impressed. The staging is massive and holographic. Resolution is great, detail more than plenty for my ears. The sound is warm and dynamic but also keeps a very well extended treble without any harshness. I would describe the mids as liquid and it has a very nice physical presence in the bass without overpowering the rest of the mix.
mind my reference headphone and favorite for all of this, is the sennheiser HD800S that I never thought could have such a bass.
overall very happy with my purchase but I will probably test out some NOS tubes along the road :)

I immediately returned my Schiit stack for this bad boy
I could not be happier with this amp. Within mins (it might have even been seconds), I knew it was a keeper. I'm running Sennheiser 660S2 and there's so so much power, warmth, and joy in the sound. It's engaging, makes you fall in love with your music again. I emailed Schiit to return the stack i just bought (and really, really liked) within the first 20 mins of listening to this wonderful amp.
Today I found a really long, ancient, piece of sh*t RCA cable in a box and hooked the TA-84 to my Wiim Ultra / Marantz 2270 / legendary and heavenly Yamaha NS-1000m (seriously, if you have a chance to get them - get them no matter the condition) and B&W sub run by the Wiim. The sound is just wonderful -- rounded, big, yet somehow still has crisp attack/decay, warm and cozy, and a little bit of a sloppy mess in the best way possible. The Marantz already produced sound like that -- the addition of the TA-84 as preamp took it to another level.
Next move it to connect a Thorens TD-160 back for some good ole headphone sessions. Can't wait.
Only complaint -- would have been great to have another digital input -- coax? optical? One USB will do, but would be so so nice to hook more up to it directly.
