Drosselmeyer's the name of one of the characters in famous Russian composer Peter I. Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet "The Nutcracker". [Tchaikovsky: 1840-1893. His death still a mystery today: was it suicide by poison or was it cholera from recklessly drinking unboiled water (when cholera was raging in Saint Petersburg, Russia)?] Drosselmeyer is an older person in the ballet. He gives a toy -- the nutcracker, in the shape of a man -- to two children,
Clara and Fritz. Clara's charmed and delighted by the nutcracker but Fritz breaks it. Later, apparently in a dream, Clara finds that the nutcracker has come to life to save the day. Details from Wikipedia:

Hence the name of this device.
