Does anyone know any specific effects of the different earcups? The description said ebony would be especially prone to coloring the sound, but in what way?

PankaicI read that description of coloring to refer to the finish-coloring, not the sound presentation.

luvmusik@luvmusic, read it again:
'Note: At checkout, you'll have your choice between Rosewood, Ebony, and Teak. Due to the nature of these woods, coloring may vary slightly; this is especially true for the Ebony enclosures.'
and you'll notice that it says 'these woods' not 'these finishes'. The cups are actually made from different wood species, and as such will exhibit minute differences in sound absorption/reflection. But, and as pointed by others already, those differences are unlikely to be recognizable to most mortals' hearing.

VillyAgreed about the sound properties, and wrote that in my posts.
We would need to ask massdrop about the "coloring", because I still feel IMO this refers to the variations in appearance.
Rosewood & Teak are fairly consistent looking within their species, and there are many types of Rosewood -those types have distinctive variations. There are also pseudo-Teaks, of other genus & species, some variations there also apply. But Ebony has the most dramatic & most differing appearances within the same genus & species - very much up to variation. I think that "coloring" may have been put in the description to alert that wide varieties of appearance for ebony are possible, but less so for teak & rosewood.
Maybe massdrop can clarify for us, please. And, thank you, massdrop for this headphone drop !

luvmusikWithout doubt, and because this is natural wood, two cups even on the same headset will not have identical grain and color patterns - may be close due to factory effort to match caps with similarities, will not be same. And with ebony it may not be close in some instances, but that is the beauty of it, imho. If I go for the drop, and it is very, very tempting to, my choice will ebony for this exact reason.

VillyYou're right, ebony is really beautiful and can look like all different pieces of art with how & where it's cut. Some types of ebony are pure black, but I don't think that species is used here for these cups.
Maybe massdrop can explain the "coloring" so more folks can select and participate in the drop with confidence.
If it pertains to sound coloration, it is best broken down by wood types in the paragraphs describing the sound signature in the description. In the place where it is now as a separate block & referring to checkout - it looks like they are suggesting when anyone selects their cups, based visually, what to expect. Hopefully we can get clarification when massdrop jumps in online in the discussion.
Unrelated to these headphones, but on wood cup topic is how cool kennerton has internally cut either 8 or 5 steps inside some of their wood cups circumference for a controlled amphitheater effect. And, JVC Victor used a separate circular wood chamber put inside some of their wood cups most likely to reduce side-reflection and wave distortion or cancellation I guess, for uniformity. Thinking it might focus & project sound, reinforce the bass & have resonance control. Different ideas, and we may see mods like damping on Teak from the modders & experimenters; not at all saying it is needed, but folks like to tinker around. There's been mods on TH-X00 already & it's interesting.
Eager to see the photos here & on headphone sites of when owners show their unique ebonies. A emu Teak-ebony gallery would be nice to show them off.
