Why would anyone accept all the downsides of a glass bottle and then keep a plastic straw and cap in contact with the water at all times? The entire point of not buying an otherwise functionally superior plastic bottle is to avoid contact between the beverage and plastic. That's why I have a glass bottle, so that my water rests only against glass. Am I not understanding something?

PaelorianUnless you're storing the bottle on its side or upside down, the cap isn't in constant contact. The straw is unfortunately, but I'm still yet to see a bottle with a glass, or even metal, straw. So you get what you can. You can always remove the straw and drink by removing the cap. Either way, the price shipped makes it a moot discussion anyway.

ZUUL42Klean Kanteen offers a stainless steel straw lid tumbler. No additional plastic below the lid. Above the lid, the straw is coated with silicone, as is the style with hard-material straws in order to prevent injury from people on the move jabbing themselves in the mouth (this is a real problem: Starbucks recalled millions of stainless steel straws because of it). Wirecutter says Hydro Flask will be coming out with something similar this spring. Also, there are many "sport" lids, of one and two-handed variety and in "nipple" and flip-up "straw" styles, that offer every advantage of a straw except for needing to tilt the bottle to drink, which is for most people a negligible disadvantage.
Personally, I most often use a Soma glass water bottle. Quality glass is quality glass, but I chose my Soma because it was significantly lighter (some glass bottles are very heavy, this EcoVessel is 1.5lbs), less expensive, and (subjectively) more stylish than it's competitors. When glass isn't appropriate or I need more of my bottles, I reach for my Klean Kanteens. I don't carry hot drinks with me, but in the future I may buy an insulated bottle for cold water. I'd probably first choose an insulated glass bottle since I enjoy drinking from glass. Lifefactory offers a glass bottle with an insulated wrap, I don't know if anyone has yet been so bold as to bring to market a double-wall glass water bottle. The technology of stainless insulated bottles is more developed than insulated glass bottles and is the way to go for the greatest insulative effect (Klean Kanteen, Hydro Flask, Zojirushi, etc.)
I maintain that a half-glass container has little appeal, but I admit the price was good. It would be a decent deal to buy the bottle, shuck the straws, and order some loop lids from the manufacturer. Might cost more than the $16 shipped I paid for my Soma bottle direct from the manufacturer, but would be less expensive than other glass bottle options.

PaelorianI hadn't gone hunting for such bottles. Sounds like we need to get some of those on the top of the polls for some later Massdrops.
