Please bring this to MD in the 30L (not pink) version. The 51l is nice, but huge!

Are you able to take the backpack straps off completely on this? If not, do they tuck away discretely?

DSH007Yes, the "backpack" straps can be removed by unthreading the strap ends from the buckles (which are themselves sewn onto the top of the duffle). If you think you wanted to use the straps later, you can store them in the mesh pocket on the inside of the duffle's lid and reattach them later. They do not otherwise tuck away. See also my note about the straps below, starting, "If these are the same duffels....", for why you might wish to detach and reattach them even if you want to use them right away. (-:

jmk451Thank you for the details! I've never quite understood this relatively new trend of putting backpack style straps on duffel bags.. seems more of an inconvenience than anything to me.. idk, maybe i'm the crazy one..
Nice heavyweight material construction. Feels like it’s pretty close to waterproof (the material itself not the bag as it has a zipper). The backpack straps are kinda a joke though. No way I’d want to carry any significant load with them. Very adjustable but the padding and sternal strap seem to land in an odd position when adjusted for load. Very nice duffel with sturdy material used, tie downs are solid, and stitching is of good quality. However the backpack straps and sternal strap are essentially useless.

If these are the same duffels sold on a well-known commerce site named after a very large river, beware that the shoulder straps may be suboptimal; the sternum strap is sewn in place and not adjustable, which leads to problems. That said, the bags themselves are roomy and durable, and the D-shaped opening works well.
jmk451Same thoughts. Shoulder straps and sternal strap are essentially useless.

DumbmedicIf you detach the straps, turn them around 180 degrees end-to-end, and reattach them, they're mildly more useful, but the sternum strap is still suboptimal. I use the straps as a single shoulder strap by buckling the sternum strap around both shoulder straps to keep them together.
I received my bag the other day, I like it. It seems to be well constructed even if it's not fully weatherproof. The backpack straps seem a little dinky but I don't think I'll really ever use them. The "D" shaped opening is great and the bag stands up on it's own. I think it's a decent value for a bag this big (81L) and of this construction quality.
