Are these different from the previously offered aluminum plates? I have heard of people having problems with the previous plates and their finishing. I wouldn't mind seeing some shots of the fully assembled keyboard with these plates too.

a_gyThese are different, fully anodized-finish aerospace grade aluminum top plates only, and I expect more precisely cut than what was offered before.

What was previously offered, which people had issues with, was a full aluminum case, all layers cut from aluminum plate, provided raw and unfinished. The main problem with that was a matter of poor manufacturing tolerances, so the layers didn't quite line up or fit the PCB and keyswitches properly, thus a fair amount of filing and grinding was necessary to even assemble the kit, let alone make it presentable looking. Then the supplier quoted double to re-run another batch, so between the huge cost increase and assembly issues, MD decided to drop the fully-Al case option after the very first ErgoDox round.

This new top-plates-only buy gives you most of the (intended) appeal of an Al case, without the assembly and finish issues from the first-round Al cases. Better yet, you can easily retrofit an already-built acrylic-case ErgoDox with these top plates.
