I loved my ER6i before they broke. How do these compare?
There’s really no comparison. The new ER3 series is simply on another level of sound quality, and I say this having listened to the new models and the 6i very recently. If you prefer the bass-light, mid-centric sound that Etymotic is known for, get the 3SE. It’s amazing. If you’re willing to sacrifice mids for highs and want to hear a bass-heavy, distinctly un-Etymotic sound, the 3XR is a great, slightly more bass-enhanced sound that's still clear and detailed. Hope that helps!
Thanks. Got the ER3XR in the mail and loving them. Any recommendations for a portable DAC to go along with it?
Sorry, totally missed this till now! I’m happy using my 3XRs straight out of my phone/laptop’s headphone jack. I have the 3SE too and find that more compatible with amplification; the XR can get boomy when amped, while an amped SE is basically a better XR. In short, I think the XR is a perfect travel companion, while the SE is better at a desk hooked up to an amp. I pair the SE with the Gustard H10 at work, which looks ridiculous but sounds great. :)
