There are a few comments here saying these are good for classical music. Could someone elaborate? Just how good and in what sense? In relation to the massdrop plus? Thanks.
m392I cannot comment on the massdrop plus, however I can say from experience that my ER4-S are excellent for Classical:
1 : Dynamic range - classical recordings haz it! The Ety's have unrivaled isolation that make sure you will be able to hear even the quietest sounds on the recording. Even in relatively quiet environments, it is amazing how much detail we lose to the fans, wind, and daily hum in typical closed back.
2: Detail - the ety's have no mercy! The Ety S tuning (SR, -S) is highly neutral and detailed. These are merciless with bad recordings, but for well curated classical these are a joy to consume audio with. Every woodwind key tap is there just as it was in the concert hall :)

m392the biggest they can handle was a concerto, something larger than that they lack bass.

m392I've owned ER-4S (the older model) for now 20 years, and I think them spectacular for classical music. Incredibly detailed, unbelievable immediacy, no harshness. Being right in your ears, they can't throw a wide soundstage - and the 4S can't deliver the slam that my huge Apogee Duetta Signature loudspeakers can with orchestral repertoire, but my Apogees also can't block out the sound of noisy neighbors or be taken on the NYC subway and allow one to listen as if the world wasn't there. The only downside of the previous models (again, which I've owned a pair of since 1998) was the build quality - which wasn't as robust as with these models. Luckily Etymotic offers extraordinary customer service, so they either repaired or replaced my originals under warranty even after the warranty had expired, and then replaced the entire set several times for the price for the replacement of a single transducer. The only downside that you might face with these is that I developed tinnitus about 8 years ago - but I can't be sure that it was because of too frequent use of the ER-4S or an ear infection that I experienced in the late 80s (which led to some high frequency hearing loss in one ear) or TMJ. BTW, I meditate daily with these in my ears, simply to block out outside noise. They are the most effective earplugs that I have ever come across. If your ear canals can handle the regular insertion and removal, there's nothing like them. They represent the best $300 that I have ever spent in high end audio.
