It is a personal cooler, and here in the very dry LA climate in the hills it works great, though I doubt it would be as good near the beach. I have one for my desk and one for my puppy at her doggy bed. She loves it. If you need to be told a tiny, USB powered cube can't move that much air and that you need to be right in front of it, I don't know what to tell you. I have it within 5 feet of me, and during a 90 degree day last summer, I used my laser thermometer to see it dropped to close to 70 degrees in the short zone around it. When I walked away from the unit, it was really noticeable. The only kicker is the $39 replacement cartridges you should probably get every year or so. If you want an A/C for larger areas, you could go get a used unit and pay lots in electricity, but this is cost effective to run all day if you are stuck in a stationary spot most of it.

This is not an air conditioner, it’s a mini swamp cooler, they are not the same thing.... a swamp works by humidifying the air, meaning if you live in a humid climate it will do nothing to cool, and it’s size would only really be able to cool no more than an office cubicle....

Wow, this thing can't even cool the space of a single king-sized bed with a single foot (12 inches) of space on the left and right. It can't even cover a prison cell!

I have the first version of this unit.
It is important to note that it is an evaporative cooler (aka: swamp cooler). How well it works is inversely proportional to the humidity of the area you live in. If you live in a dry area (southwest US, for example), it will work wonderfully. Live in Florida? Don’t even bother. You’d be better off with a desk fan.
Also will stress the fact that it is a personal cooler. It will not cool an entire room. If you stick it on a desk it will cool an area around the desk and that’s about it.

If I use it in a larger room, what will happen?

phaysaalPractically nothing.
It is a personal cooler, it’ll affect the air immediately around the unit. It’s designed to be used on a desk or a small office.
In a larger room it won’t make a difference.

phaysaalNothing. It's just blowing water vapor with a fan.

So I already own an evaporative cooler, but not a smart one like this that also cleans the air. Been looking for one with exactly these features, but for cooling a larger room size. This tiny model would be fantastic for a personal space like a cubicle, small open workspace area, etc. Massdrop, why did you call it an air conditioner -- which uses chemicals, different cooling process, and is more energy intensive? IMHO, it would be better to just call it what it is -- an evaporative cooler -- along with pointing out that it's an awesome personal cooling/air cleaning solution that is substantially more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly than air conditioners in general. The fact that it's smart is icing on the cake.

This is my first time - does this mean we might pay more than $149? I have been following the site for more than a year now but it's the first time that joining on a drop. thanks all!
Really? I have had people tag me in discussions that I was not a part of and it pinged me. I also just pinged a vendor today in a discussion that he was not in and within a few minutes they responded.

Tex-ArozziThat's pretty weird that was possible, but it looks like they have fixed this now per yesterday's release notes so it's a moot point either way

So is it a tiny, smart swamp cooler?

WillfeltnerYes. Evaporates water and cools the air in that process. The opposite process of a typical ac that removes moisture; with the same result of cooling.

BareEssenceWhere does the waste heat go?
Edit: nevermind, I see that it just blows air over a damp surface to effect the evaporation.
