Be careful: These aren't original Cherry MX switches. These are clones!

I posted this in exactly two places: once here, and once in a top-level comment so it wouldn't get lost.

dinosaur_meatThats still twice on one thread, and still two times too many. It’s not confirmed and there’s not really a reason to assume it would be part of that whole situation. At this point it’s misinformation/pot-stirring which isn’t beneficial to anyone. I understand apprehension based in recent events, but this is a bit over the top.

Reposting at top-level so it doesn't get lost in a thread: Based on the timing of this drop and the appearance of the switches, I suspect that these are the cloned Tealios. There is currently an ongoing dispute around them. Objectively, they were fine switches, but I would proceed with extreme caution. See here: https://kbdfans.cn/blogs/news/statement and https://kbdfans.cn/blogs/news/article Notable quote: > Because the mold was handed over, KBDfans T1 switches could not be produced, KBDfans has given up the responsibility of investigating me in this case, things could have been successfully resolved. However, the moulds transfer was not smooth. The agreed deadline for the transfer was May 20. At the last moment, Dongxuan Li repented. He retained part of the mould and refused to transfer it all. And I haven't retained any evidence before. All products and some moulds have been hidden by Dongxuan Li. Now, my survey found that Dongxuan Li used my mould to make low cheap products and sold them in the market (no logo or other logo). As the owner of the mould, I will continue to investigate the legal liability of the sellers. I hope that the customized merchants and players will not buy the switches from Dongxuan Li, or they will face the corresponding legal liability. After investigation, Durock of Shenzhen Deyan Technology Co., Ltd. has already sold the products made by our moulds on the internet. We have got the samples and will publicize them later.

Its more like plagiarism. They might not claim to be a clone/copy but it could still be using someone else's design claiming it as their own.

dinosaur_meatCompletely agree. Would be curious to put my hands on these but I'm not giving them my money. It's about principles.

Countless switch-making factories and assiduous engineers are the keys in what has made China relevant in the mechanical keyboard community. With our respect and as a tribute to them, we are more that ecstatic to introduce the EverGlide switches, which are not manufactured through cloned Zealpc molds and, in fact, not through any pre-existing mold on the market out there. We always believed that only with the rising of new manufacturers comes the prosperity of our community and we do think that we did a pretty good job in adding yet another block to the hoped prosperity by making these cuties. The new EverGlide switches feature four colors, all of which are colors newly introduced to the market. Sakura Pink, Amber Orange, Jade Green and Coral Red all epitomize the Asian culture we are deeply proud of. These gorgeous colors are inspired by Japanese Sakura (Sakura pink), as well as precious cultural relics from China (Amber Orange and Jade Green). We have dodged, with caution, the Tiffany Blue on any option of our EverGlide switches which might mislead to the affiliation with the notorious Stealios. *However I still find you guys in discussions relating these switches with Stealios. I have to make it clear that we have started our co-operation with the manufacturer of the EverGlide switches before Stealios became even a thing and that we have worked with the manufacturer throughout the process of designing and producing the EverGlide switches. We are, therefore, 100% sure that these switches have absolutely zero correlation with Stealios and we are totally against any form of counterfeiting and cloning.
*It should be noted that, the source/manufacturer of Stealios has completely ceased to operate, which has caused and is proved by the fact that KBDfans has stopped offering their T1 and Koala switches as well. We have to acknowledge that most switches currently available on the market, which apparently include the EverGlide switches, are clones of Cherry MX switches. Kailh, Gateron, Outemu and loads of other manufacturer have been the beneficiary of Cherry. For that, we are forever grateful and appreciative. Now with the introduction of new manufacturers, new switches and new options for our customers, we hope our EverGlide switches can do a decent job in building a better community and incorporating more enthusiasts in this lovely hobby.

JackzzZThank you for your work. Is there any chance we could get the datasheets or the force curves for each of the switches? It's very intriguing that the molds were created from scratch. But for potential customers, I think that makes it even more important to have additional information. I'm currently on the fence about buying some Jade Greens. Thank you!

JackzzZ"*It should be noted that, the source/manufacturer of Stealios has completely ceased to operate, which has caused and is proved by the fact that KBDfans has stopped offering their T1 and Koala switches as well." This isn't accurate. T1s are still being sold on primekb.com. I emailed them and they told me that the switches are still in production -- i.e., they are not just selling off what was already produced. So the factory has not stopped operating, apparently.

The mold marks look a LOT like the mold marks from Stealios. I would avoid these, because the factory that produces these has produced fakes of Gateron and ZealPC switches.

IredeusThe guy who claimed owning those moulds said he didn't keep evidence on the Manufacturer hide his moulds. I guess it will take a while to prove the new product is coming from his moulds. I am interesting in what evidence he will show to prove the switch is coming from the steal moulds.

It just didn't seem right that there is a negative stigma associated with Drops Everglide switches, even before they were produced and shipped. I've written this piece to hopefully inform newer community members to be both sceptical and optimistic about what you read and watch on the internet. https://typehype.net/threads/misinterpretation-of-simple-switch-reviews-everglide-switches-%E2%80%93-keeping-open-minded-about-the-keyboard-content-you-view.1052/

There are many switch manufacturers in China and engineers who work hard on development of switches.   Everglide switch dose never copy Zealpc’s model, and models from other switch manufacturers.  It is a good to the market and boost the market of mechanical keyboards that the new switch manufacturer comes up. The new switch has four colours, which are blended by EverGild. They are  Sakura Pink, Amber orange, Jade green and coral red. Of which all stand for the Asian culture. Sakura Pink is inspired by the Sakura. Amber orange, coral red and jade green are inspired by the Chinese traditional culture. All of colours have good meanings in Asian culture.  More important, the colour is different with Tiffany’s colour palette.  So far, most of the switch is originated from Cherry MX switch, including Kailh, Gateron and other new switches. The patent of Cherry MX design is out of date.  Manufacturers like Kailh and Gateron take the nearly perfect design of Cherry MX switch as reference to develop their new switches for mechanical keyboards. Additionally, it will bring more options to customers with the coming of new manufacturers. It is a fantastic and benefit-benefit thing that more options of pressure grams and richer user experiences, isn’t it?

watson-jiangYour comment brings up color and cultural significance in spades, which given the concerns in the thread here is largely irrelevant, but completely glosses over the manufacturer origin issue. There have been *many* recolored linear switches in various weights and configurations from different manufacturers. Gateron, Bsun, Greetech, to name a few. The concern here is not the color of the switches, or their weighting, but their origin instead. People generally don't want to buy from manufacturers that have intentionally decieved both vendors and customers with counterfeit/fake products for the sake of profit. Hence many people here want some reassurance that this manufacturer is NOT the Stealio manufacturer, given the timing of these switches' appearance, the seemingly lower number of manufacturers who can make full polycarbonate housings, and the apparently smooth/untextured PCB mount legs.

A telltale sign of the "stealio" fake Tealio switches was their very smooth/reflective/untextured PCB mounting legs. If you look at this Drop-provided image these seem to have a very clear and untextured look. There's no way to say exactly for certain that these are the same molds as stealios but I hope Massdrop has done their research on this manu to make sure they're not using the stealio molds. It's weird when I post the raw URL, that the image redirects to just the drop logo. You can see it un-resized yourself if you rightclick on the image on the listing and open in a new tab, then remove all the formatting text after the ".jpg" in the URL.

In my opinion, this is pretty concerning. It would be great if Drop could post macro photos of the switch bottoms to show the legs in more detail. The Taobao listing for these switches also has all the shots which show the switch bottoms with a depth of field set so there's no way to discern whether or not the legs are shiny, but has plenty of shots of the tops and sides which are clear.

XercesThats... a pretty small thing to accuse a switch of being a counterfeit. I'm sure many switches have similar looking/textured mounting legs (not necessarily just those that are smooth). If we were to get a picture of the stems by themselves it could clear up the picture a lot more.

IonicNovaNo, no, he is right. Drop needs to drop everything and pay thousands of dollars to give us detailed scans of these switches, all the way down to using electron microscopes. We don't want them using the same atoms that Zeal PC uses.
