Wow. Wow.
Other survival/bushcraft knives handle's are too short, too narrow, or don't have a hand stop (?) to prevent my hand from sliding down on to the blade. This handle fits perfectly. What a blade! I purchased this not because I needed another knife, but because I have heard so much about it, and couldn't pass on such a great price.
Wow.
Well the SRK and A1 are virtually identical in size and profile, neither is dwarfed or out of class. Rock on if you’ve had good experience with Fallkniven’s laminated stuff, they have such a great reputation. But there are some awesome competitive/value options. The SRK is offered in a laminated stainless like the A1, too, btw. I believe the advantage of CPM-3V is better toughness than a VG-10 core, while still being semi-stainless; so at the same price as an A1, that might be a difficult trade off to decide on. Because that VG-10 edge will definitely chip in real use. After all, that’s the point of laminating softer steel, to get better overall resilience, otherwise the VG-10 alone would just crumble over time. That’s where I was commenting that I like the value of a less expensive carbon steel like SK-5. It’s not going to hold an edge as well as 3V or be rust resistant as VG-10, but it’s really tough and still easy to take care of. I’ve only used my SRK out on the farm and for backyard firewood, but it’s never chipped and just rips through wood forever. And personally I prefer sharpening dull and rolled edges like that - taking chips out of my VG-10 folders is a huge pain in the neck.
b.parker1218Here's a review of the A1 that compares to the SRK
https://bladereviews.com/fallkniven-a1-review/
The SRK "feels like a toy." This does not sound anything like "near identical" to me.
The A1 can chop, you cannot really chop with the SRK, this puts it in a separate class.
The SRK weighs 8oz,the A1 12oz. It's substancially larger... By a third. "Near identical"? I think not.
The Fallkniven S1 is much closer to the SRK.
As far as steel, yes 3 v is a better steel but steel is but a single factor in knife performance. Heat treat, geometry etc play significant roles.
Everyone raved about the convexed opposed to regular v edge. It's an important distinction that makes for better edge stability.
As I said in a comment below, knife choice should be decided on your personal needs. I bet most knife makers and experts would say a knife as beefy as the A1 does not need 3V,in fact very few people will ever come close to the limits of a 3V to really benefit from it.
The A1 has been around since the 90s, show me examples of this knife failing in all those years.
To dismiss it because of VG10 is just a bit ignorant, especially at this price.
Survival Lily easily demonstrated that this knife isn't worth the money, and VG-10 is not a good choice of steel for a survival knife. She broke the tip off in about 30 seconds with just easy prying on an oak log. My $70 Buck Selkirk didn't lose the tip when I tried the same thing. I couldn't make it break no matter how hard I tried. It bent, but never broke.
kurt_mcdonaldThat was the S model. A smaller model.
I like her channel but it's ironic she chose a lesser stainless steel for her own model knife.
The reason hers might not chip out is all down to being softer. Fallkniven could as easily use a softer ht and achieve a "tough" knife but, like all things in knives, it's a trade off with edge retention.
Ultimately, there is no perfect one knife. Ask yourself what you want from the knife, then choose size, Geo, steel.
barry-bogartThe cold steel SRK and Falkniven knives are made in the same place. The SRK in San Mai (VG1) Steel is comparable to the VG10 on Falkniven knives. I have both the SRK and A1. The A1 is thicker with a stronger tip and edge grind. The SRK is a more nimble slicier blade. I prefer the ergonomics and blade grind of the A1 as a outdoors or camp style knife.
The warranty issue
Massdrop buys from dealer then sells to you.
Warranty does not follow such a "third party sale" only first sale from auth dealer to 1st buyer
Like watches, cars & everything else
BigDogsI see what your saying, but.....
WHY doesn't Massdrop buy from Fallkniven (like a dealer) then sell to us?
It'd also avoid the middleman markup that the dealer charged Massdrop....
AND we'd get a warranty.
Maybe Massdrop can't?
**SIGNIFICANT**
Massdrop informed me (in Sept 2018) my Fallkniven A1 purchased on MD (Sept 2018) IS NOT warranted because it was purchased here on MD, and not an established knife store. : (
Although I know mine bought off MD is genuine, I'd like it warrantied should something happen.
Something to think about...
Please elaboerate on how that is "well known".
I have never seen it posted anywhere or read where anyone else stated that.
To me, as long as it is a genuine article arriving in the Fallkiven box with the hidden hologram mark, it will be able to be warrantied, yes?
Can no one answer that?
I do believe Massdrop purchases them from an authorized american distributor, so it SHOULD be able to be warrantied, my friend.
So, I am not agreeing with your statement that items would not be warranteed.
So please, ...someone else,..... if you can tell me, I just need someone to tell me which company to approach in the U.S. (oe maybe Fallkniven themselves) for an issue
