The Fanmusic C6 cables offer much improved sound versus stock. Yes, you have to line up the pins, and push hard to seat the connectors, but then they stay seated.
I'm driving my Sennheiser HD 650s through a Schiit Fulla USB DAC on my virtual piano rig, which includes a Kawai MP10 Stage Piano and a Garritan Yamaha CFX Concert Grand virtual piano. The full glory of this concert grand piano in the famous Abbey Road Studios Studio One is much more apparent through the Fanmusic cables, especially in the way the sound reverberates and decays in this famous studio space.
HD 6XX and the THX 789/SMSL SU8 combo. A major improvement from the standard cable. I'm liking my HD 6XX a lot more now. I hear improvements across the board with these cables. Can't tell if it is due to the balanced plug or the better quality cable, maybe a bit of both. Excellent upgrade.
Pretty sure this cable blew my Jotunheim, unless it was extremely coincidental that it died the very first time I used this cable ...
UPDATE: Turns out it was a coincidence, confirmed by testing with a multimeter and new amp (which took forever to source given my location).
Cable is good: no microphonics; good flexibility; good connections although a little tight.
Been looking for a similar cable for my HE400S which I am finding either impossible to source or unsure of the flexibility from pictures and lack of reviews.
YES the cables need to be manhandled to push them in. If putting into a pair of 6XX's part of the plastic housing will probably deform slightly from grooves inside the socket, which is fine.
To actually get them in I recommend bracing where the wire enters the housing in your stronger handing and pushing on that point while you grasp and push the cans inwards. I didn't break mine and I pushed the hell out of them. (note: the L and the R should be facing outwards from the cans)
The cable itself is quite good. I have the XLR model paired with the DX7s and I now prefer it over my initial setup with the stock cable on the 6XX & a Schiit stack. Although I just got them today and was going to give 4 stars for the frustration of putting them in I'm giving 5 because of the quality and the fact that the housing took that much force and didn't break.
For all of the people having problems plugging in the cable, its because the cable for the 6xx and the 58x includes an indention and this cable does not. As some have mentioned, forcefully pushing it in the first time will solve the problem because you are essentially creating the indention using your headphones. For cables marketed as a replacement for these headphones, I'm pretty disappointed that this detail was overlooked.
Pushing the cables into my HD 650's must have broken a connection because the left side now doesn't function. I would encourage the manufacturer's to look at the connector pieces again and tweak the dimensions so they fit well
I'm sorry I do not care how good these sound but the amount of force I have to use to put the pins in is unacceptable for anything that comes from Drop. With the lack of directions on how to put them in because you can't really tell which way they go I am afraid I might have harmed my headphones.
I ordered this fanmusic cable (4 pin XLR) and a periapt (4 pin XLR) at about the same time, the fanmusic was for my HD6XX/58X and the periapt for my HE-4XX.. Just to be clear the fanmusic cable is in no way a bad cable it works as a cable just fine.. It is much longer than the base periapt but that is pretty much the only thing it has over the periapt.. The build, feel and look are all better on the periapt and there is not much of a price difference between the two, shipping was pretty even.. If I had to do it all over again I would definitely have ordered 2 of the periapt cables.. Like I said, this cable works just fine.. There are better options out there..
I wanted a cable with a little bit more substance at the 1/4 inch connector. This one is a nice metal end that feels heavy and solid, the cable its self is thin and that is a bummer. The cloth wrap that covers the cable is sloppy and inconsistent in look and feel. At the end of the wire where the 1/4 inch terminates there are little frays in the fabric wrap straight out of the box.
The presentation is nice when you open up the box but trying to straighten out the cable is a NIGHTMARE. Especially the rubber wrapped bits that terminates into the head phone connection. They refuse to straighten out, and the tension behind the twist in the wire wants to make the whole cable spin into an awkward shape.
The ends that terminate to the Sennheiser two prong connection are not the best quality. Loose plastic bits around the prongs from pressing them through the plastic. The prongs do not look like quality metal at all they are very very dull and look almost discolored. Compared to my stock cable the Fanmusic cable looks very very cheap. The stock cable has sharp, bright gold connectors that are consistent in size and finish. These Fan music ones were very sad looking in person.
All in all
The Cable works, there is no difference in sound quality but i do not expect this cable to last more than 6 months. And for 70-80$ I expected A LOT more.
The cable is nice but I had to mod the connectors slightly to actually fit in my HD 6XX headphones. And that’s kind of ridiculous that it doesn’t just work straight out of the box unless you put way too much pressure on the connector even though it’s advertised to do so. I feel like I missed something but idk. I should’ve just bought from Periapt. . .
