OK, I like retro, but seriously? Are you really going to go back to a razor like this and actually use it? As an art piece, maybe, or a true antique, I could see it. But $160 + for a razor that is known for cutting you? I think I will stick with my razor from the 2010's that gives me a superior shave without taking skin with it.

randoritaTry shaving with one before you continue spending a fortune on blade cartridges. What makes this particular DE razor so expensive is that it's made of all stainless steel, rather than the pot metal most cheap DE razors are. I've had several $30 razors snap at the screw because the metal quality was so poor.

randoritaI was like you few months ago but never questioned the way (I personally feel your question as quite harsh) you did. I searched for answers (in online forums and wickededge subforum in reddit) and if needed more, asked questions here on multiple drops. Many helped and I bought another Steel razor though for smaller price but with features I like and will use and now I am converted for the past 5 shaves and will remain so for the rest of life. I imagine how my dad would have loved every shave he did with a DE razor.
I am also thinking how Gillette brainwashed all Gen Y men and made tons of money with the disposable cartridges and my current set of remaining cartridges will be used for some other purposes:)
Always research and then question someone. It shows you are really interested to learn and the responder will be more eager to help you rather than poking a group of enthusiasts with a blunt generic question.
Every product has a market and entrepreneurs succeed if they are able to find and cash in with that target market.

randoritaThis is considered one of the best made DEs currently being sold. Combined with a Feather blade it is supposed to be one of the smoothest as well. Yes you can shave with another DE razor for $30. Like many things you can "drive" a basic model or get something a little more luxurious. The street price is usually about $180 on this DE.

randoritaDE's dont take skin, DEs are better because they dont lift the hair up to get the close shave they get which leaves you without bumbs and in grown hairs

RonJamboWhy does everyone think stainless steel costs so much? You're only looking at $2 in materials.

PointyI would think the cost is entirely based on the grade of stainless steel used as well as how it was made into its final shape -- CNC Machined vs forged for example.
I know that their replaceable blade straight razors use the same metal that they use to make scalpels for the medical industry. It's also why they have that special plastic that allows their razors to be essentially boiled to kill germs for sterilization. If I had to take a guess, as far as a consumer-grade DE razor is concerned, the metal here is actually pretty decent and not the cheaper grades used.

randorita@randorita Do some research. For the cost of THREE Gillette 5-blade cartridges, I bought enough blades to last me 2+ years. They aren't aren't the cheapest and they aren't the best, but they result in a better shave than any multiblade cart.
Feather blades are a little more expensive but they are amazing, recognized as the best by many. Really good handles like this are more expensive, especially with Feather's branding, but it will last 100+ years, unlike the $18 plastic vibrating pieces of junk that take AA batteries and get ruined when they get wet like they do during shaving.
Once you try a DE razor and get the hang of it, you realize you've been scammed your whole life. DE shaves better. Closer shave, no irritation, no nicks, cheaper, no rip off, and no fighter jet commercials. :)

jtm1Let's be real. The cost of blades don't play any role here...
None of DE shaving enthusiasts I know have only one razor; they have a few and the cost of each is usually above $50.
Then come brushes, many of them - again $40 and up a pop.
Of course, you won't buy $3 Gillette shaving gel to use with your Feather, will you? So, you buy expensive soaps and creams, pre-shaves, aftershaves, used blades banks, stands for your brushes and razors, etc.
We are talking around $1K here; how many cartridge systems and refills can you buy for this kind of money?
DE shaving is fun, but saving money has nothing to do with it...

semkaYou're doing this wrong. I've been DE shaving for probably 5 years and I've probably spent $200 total in all that time.

semkaThere are two major reasons I prefer DE shaving. First, it incredibly cheaper than multiblade carts. Anyone is welcome to keep spending $1 per shave with a multiblade cart — I like only spending $0.01 to $0.05 per shave with a DE blade. The second reason is for the better shave experience. I don't get any burn/irritation at all, I get a closer shave, and it takes less work.
The most expensive items were my razor itself and the brush. But I figured I had spent more on replacing the cheap POS plastic MIC vibrators. I've also owned one DE razor before buying this AS-D2. I don't need more (except for this one, a few others, and those others I've had my eye on.
Seriously, I spent more five years ago on 16 Gillette multiblade carts from Costco than I have on DE blades since, and I've only used half of the DE blades. Just to be clear, you could get about 800 Derby Extra blades for the cost of a 16 pack of vibrating multiblades. Feathers are a little more expensive at about 200 Feather blades for the same price. Still, 200 vs 16. And I get to keep my skin, and it doesn't turn purple.
With a $1k budget, I could add this razor to what I've already spent and still have enough money for good cream/soap and blades for several decades. I'd run out of that money buying multiblade carts before I ran out of what I already have now.

semkaI do realize that. My point was, you do not HAVE to spend $1K on DE shaving. Sure there are enthusiasts that have spent that and more. However, I would not want to have someone not try DE shaving because they thought it was overly costly, when it can be done less expensively than multiblade shaving, if you try.

omaneyIt means that I don't believe that a straight razor gives an objectively better shave, but the user can at least feel good about using one.

jtm1There's a reason it's called the "razor and blades" business model. ;)
Just like game consoles, ink-jet printers (!$%#), subsidized cell phones, and countless other ripoffs in this world.
That said, is there any reason to buy this over the $60 Standard razor that sometimes shows up at MD? (Which I have, but I'm still slicing up my face while getting used to it.)

gibbousmoonI have both the Feather and Standard, and for me the Feather is clearly superior in every possible way to the Standard. It's more substantial feel, better quality, and shaves closer. My Standard is up for sale. The only pluses for the Standard is the included stand and price.

semkaI agree completely with this.
The whole "DE shaving saves money" argument does not hold much water with me. I went through a DE phase a few years ago and I ended up spending a TON of money trying to find the best configuration of tools.
I prefer a baby butt smooth shave, but I was never able to achieve it with my Merkur. However, I eventually ended up having the best shaves of my life when I started applying the DE techniques to my Shick Quattro. Not only was I able to get a better shave with a disposable, but I was able to shave FASTER than with a DE. Shaving with a DE was always this overdrawn production for me, it would take forever.
Its for these reasons why I don't buy the whole "Shick and Gillette have brain washed this generation" argument.
With all that said....I am eying this razor and wondering if I should give it another chance.
