How does this compare to a Merkur, which goes for only about $30?

matkamMaterial and build quality wise, the Feather AS-D1 and AS-D2 are superior to most other modern razors such as Merkur. These other modern razors use pot metal/zamak which, once the outer plating starts to flake, is impossible to replate. The AS-D2 is stainless steel.
Shave-wise, the AS-D1 is a pretty mild shaver. I haven't tried the AS-D2. Merkur has many models ranging from the safety bar head used on the 34C and 38C and other models to the Futur, Vision, and slant bar razors on the 37C and 39C.
