Why are companies shoving android down our throats? Android is inefficient and cumbersome with hi-def players even fiio has an option to boot ditching most of the virus called android.
Shame companies do not go the xDuoo way with minimalist OS's that just focus on the main use case playback to the best of the HW's offering.

EvantelicoI'm a 15+ year old computer scientist, I hate inefficiencies, spyware, sandboxing users, privacy violations, user tracking without consent... etc... you know everything that android is. Each android device has at least 2 machines up and running on one battery the real hardware and linux and the virtual android one go figure why battery does not last not to mention all the security openings created by such a stack.
It's a long topic and a lot of people, specially users might not agree but I've been checking it's guts for a while now. Android and iOS are just short of getting a subcutaneous chip and letting government and or megacorps track and categorize you :)

MonetAll this cus Fiio added better support for inline mics... You need perspective.

PejellI beg to differ I have my own perspective based upon my values and needs regardless of social pressure or status quo... even in the tech world.
If a company decides to support software or values or conflict materials or whatever I just decide not to condone or support them with my money... you see what I have tons of is precisely that, perspective.
No gadget is vital all of this is triviality and spare cash so one can be picky. I'll buy bullion instead of android or iOS stuff... The ONLY real true worth voting one can do in life is with one's wallet. :)

MonetJust because you have a perspective, doesn't inherently make it right, or balanced. The same can be said of me; however, have a look and see why I remove imbalance and a need for correctness:
It's as simple as worth. Is it worth it to have such vitriol for a brand or style or minor design choice? Depends... I don't buy or support apple, but that's because they abuse other countries' low human rights standards to sell over-priced jewelry-tech. It's morally reprehensible. Enabling inline mics... not so much. You dislike Android so you roll that down the line to things connected. It's a perspective alright, but one that is imbalanced.
Some code, maybe a chip, to increase the usability of the product for the majority of users, one which (should) have zero affect on users who don't utilize the feature, is not worth anyone's time, or is your time's worth = petty and inconsequential design elements you dislike by mere association?
This is a lopsided sht sandwich btw. I agree with many things you said, even to some extent with your dislike of Android (though with a little more precise targeting than you, I think.) I agree wholeheartedly about using our money more wisely. I just think you are re-focusing your hate of android due to association. Just cus you dislike android doesn't mean that increasing inline mic support for everyone is actually a bad thing. Of course you have A perspective, I'm just trying to show you that it may be fundamentally imbalanced is all.
And for the record, I own the X1, love it, and wish it had better inline mic support. :P Why? Cus I use iems all day at work and its easier to press the button than take off the buds every time I need to stop for someone, and it's easier to pause my music. I may not like all of android's behaviour and choices, but that has no bearing on inline mic support because it isn't worth my time or effort to bother.
If it's worth yours, so be it, but I still say a more balanced perspective would help, and you wouldn't feel the need to rip on a product for such an inconsequential design element.

MonetThank you for the thorough explanation. ^^
Then should we just have Windows phones then? What do you suggest for a phone OS if you seem to like neither Android nor iOS?

PejellYou see Pejell my perspective might not be balanced to you because you have different values and maxims in life. As I said I ain't no capricious youngster I am a computer scientist who has worked with HP, Accenture, Backcountry, Bodybuilding.com, Digitas and a lot of other reasonable big players, also I have gutted android I know its DNA.
Now I, as you also said, respect your opinion and embrace passionate and respectful discussion.
Just to clarify I do not HATE Android, I just know what it is how it works and what it does. Id rather invest more, as a developer in embedded systems than use android and submit myself and my data to Google's whims not to mention to add yet another abstraction layer and proxy to devices that should be as lean and power saving as possible.
I just choose not to support them but I am not ripping Fiio, I just said it was a shame they did not continue with their embedded OS tailored to their HW and that due to that I decided upon xDuoo. No ripping no hate, just vocal on my assessment of android.
Cheers mate

EvantelicoWell here I am quite biased. My opinion of how a phone should work is first and foremost calls, signal, responsiveness and power efficiency. Apps are mostly trivialities (some exceptions of course which really add value to the smartphone experience)
I started with symbian, moved to meego and now have been using SailfishOS for years.
Sailfish OS is a pure Linux OS based on Meego and developed by all the Nokia engineers that resisted the MS takeover and decided to soldier on with what they though was the right way to proceed.
Sailfish also supports android applications, though the android layer does not sandbox the kernell nor it runs preventing direct access to the HW. When you run an android app you run it on a single thread and the android interface only runs for that particular app.
Hope that made sense. Intex and indian company has a nice Sailfish offering called aquafish which is my only smartphone.
Windows phones showed promise it is a shame MS totally dropped the ball on it. BB10 is also another great OS and the passport phone still proves to be of great value IMO.
Hope that helped. But yes, we the ones that decided that privacy and full ownership and control of our purchased hardware is a priority have little options to go to. Check out SailfishOS and Jolla.
Cheers

MonetOk, well I offer this last comment and then I'm done. I'm glad for a respectful discussion online so you have my appreciation there for sure. If you respond, I will read it.
I don't have the experience you do, but my college training was in software dev (broad scope, it was an entry level program) and I spent years as a private, small and medium business tech. I mention this so you know I'm not oblivious to at least some of the finer details when it comes to how many popular software packages are built and managed. I agree wholeheartedly that the mainstream os's and applications should be lean and built more ethically. I'd love that.
From an outside position, you should understand that you really do appear to be taking an intense? dislike of these systems and applying it to things connected, regardless of the significance of that connection. It's just some code (I assume no hw chip required, I admit I don't know) to support inline mic controls. It's added value and need not be anything more.
And this is just a perspective you can take or leave, but it IS one that would allow you to focus on when android or ios is actually a real issue, and not merely topically connected.
Take care.

MannyAkimI believe that used to be the case to the point where fiio heavily modified android to fit their x7 but the results where not as satisfactory so they created an alternate boot option that allows you to start the device with a lean OS which bypasses most of android. But I have to admit I am not up to speed on it's current audio API

DeltaGAs a computer scientist I use real computers or laptops for real stuff. My phone is only a communication device and sometimes a music player or last resort camera. I do not use streaming apps I believe in owning one's music and paying the artist in full, I do not see music as a commodity but as art as such I see no value to streaming apps and low bitrates. I also like to own my movies.
Here we're talking about digital audio players, I only expect them to sound better than a phone and only that, I do not expect nor need wi-fi, internet, bluetooth much less apps when thinking about a gadget to plug in to my fostex mark IIIs and enjoy my music. For all of that stuff I have (if I so needed) my phone which I am happy to say it is not and has never been an android.
But if someone wants all that added fat on top... go with android if privacy and performance is not your thing android will serve you well. Mine is just a personal opinion and if you see it queer maybe it is the fact that I am not a millennial so my priorities are very different. (I am not an Gen X just in case I am part of the lost generation between 76 and 82 post X and proto mill)
Cheers guys

MonetBut Windows isn't the best for privacy either...
Regardless of that - while you personally might not need it - there are many who asked and are willing to pay for BT, Wifi, Streaming, Internets and other features that Android has to offer.
Plus custom music app is golden if you have a specific usage case scenario.
Personally, I also like the old school method - FLAC rips of the CDs - no streaming - but that is mostly because I'm new to it and most bands that I really like are hard to find on streaming services. Especially as I can't search for bands with Japanese character but do listen to certain songs that have names written with katakana or hiragana.
At any rate - I do trust FiiO to do a good job with their implementation of Android on a DAP so we can enjoy music both in old fashion way but also to let the younger audience enjoy the dap to the fullest!
Cheers!

MonetSo in your 15 years experience as a 'computer scientist' - have you never crossed the anti-pattern: "Reinventing the Square wheel". As a 24 year experienced software engineer and computer scientist I wonder what kind of work you are doing. Are you constantly reinventing wheels in the pursuit of the most efficient roll?
Cool that you are a computer scientist bro but - expecting companies to invent sub-par solutions so you have what you want as a single consumer is not only short sided by very indicative that you have missed a few key points in your 15 years of scienceing.
Great place for some research on the subject: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-pattern#Software_engineering

P1MPBOT5000You make me laugh dude. First and foremost I said I expected optimal solutions circumvented by MY expectations and core values. If they do not then I WILL NOT SUPPORT the company with my hard earned money, period it the solution serves YOUR values and needs have at it hoss. You are assuming changes are inherently positive, while I for one, reserve that judgement until I get close and personal with the solution and evaluate if it serves my own needs and purposes. I never said nor implied that because it is not what I look for it would be a futile product nor that it would not serve other people's needs.
I guess you avoid embedded and specialized top quality software, you think assembly and C++ are over kill and that no one needs to understand memory assignment and ordum calculations for solutions? Am I right?
As a solution architect I am well aware some solutions are tailored to a vast and very generic population to maximize the return of investment and profits. As an individual and power user and developer of software gadgets and solutions in Accenture and HP just to name a few I have come to understand power users and how demanding and concrete they are in their need, that is why specialized software and hardware exists.
I am one of those and I repeat I never (If you bothered to read the whole threat) imposed my needs or opinion as the truth or the optimal general solution nor I bashed or badmouthed fiio, I mentioned Xduoo in their x3 had a propietary OS that just focused on what it needed to be and ended up being an amazing solution for me.
Totalitarianism and dictatorship usually try to silence free thinkers and circumvent the consensus of masses to the status quo which serves their own purposes. When one has no arguments you fall back in attacking the character and the person.
You are the one assuming tailored and efficient is somehow subpar. In a very respectful way I will say you need to hit the gim as you need to come with much better arguments besides questioning my credentials and very own personal opinion.
Oh and one last thing I am college graduated on computer science so I find your quotes on my degree deeply offensive.

MonetThis is the most pretentious comment chain I've seen on Massdrop. I'm sure the government and Chinese hackers wanna get into our music player with all them Android exploits; just to get all that valuable information about how many times we've played Oingo Boingo's "Little Girls" on repeat.
Thanks for the funny read.
