Okay, Fiio found a new marketing strategy (probably copied from someone else):
If your marketing studies indicate that your new product is going to be popular in Japan, make 2 "versions" of it. Make a slight cosmetic change to one of them and label it as "Special Japanese Edition".
Increase the price of the "Special" by 30%, grease some distributor palms to block parallel imports of the cheaper version, do some fancy online marketing of how "Special" this is, and whoala! Increases in profit margin will impress CFO and CEO! Can also boast (privately or maybe on Chinese websites) how easy it is to screw Japanese consumers.
Not to mention this "Special" may also be popular on some American group buy sites where many compulsive buyers are so willing to take it up their own a........
Man, so much negativity going on. Don't buy it then.
Got it! I gave my business to iBasso. I hope they are not subsidiaries of the same company. :)
I am ranting because there was a previous drop of the cheaper version (lowest at $299), that was abruptly terminated after 30 units were sold in 24 hrs. Fiio 'explained' they could not handle more than that number!
Didn't even realize this was the special japanese edition with extra bumpy scroll wheel
