I really got an itch right now and I'm thinking of scratching it with these puppies. However, never heard them, the five bills is a significant "sight unseen" investment. I'm currently using a venerable, but very low mileage pair of Senn HD 580's (which got me back into the headphone game as I found that the foam surrounds vaporized since the last time I used them and spent $70 replacing them - add a Schitt Magni/Modi Uber and, Bingo!, I'm back in) on the desktop and a pair of AKG K545's with a Fiio E18 as my mobile rig.
Truthfully, I like the AKG's more than the HD 580's. Quicker, more immediate but with a more realistic sense of instrument and vocal spacing where the HD 580's seem a tad dark, a little muddy and recessed in comparison. As such, would the FAD VI's be an upgrade that I would appreciate or should I keep saving my dinero for either the Oppo PM1's or AKG K812's (or some such item)?
Consider the K7XX. You obviously don't mind using Massdrop and waiting a little while, and that headphone is ridiculously good value - and you've said you like AKG.
I'd argue that part of what you get for your $300 additional cost with the Sonorous VI is a headphone where you don't really need an amp; but you've already made that investment, and the K7XX will appreciate it more than the VI.
