To answer my own question above, it seems the patch with washing instructions lists the color in Chinese, which I can't read but suspected from the Arabic numeral saying 290 - their color number for Brown. And according to Google Translate including the surrounding Chinese it translates as "Color 290 Brown". It still doesn't really *look* brown but at least this patch is sewn on, presumably by machines in-factory, and not merely a sticker label applied by a mere fallible human, so I guess I have to concede that this probably is Brown, and the pictures are misleading.
