Investigating a bit, I tried to search photographs in real situations to check the color, and I found a couple in flickr that should clarify quite a bit about how dark Navy is.
In the first, it has a bright light pointed directly, so it seems a bit clearer than it really is (it's overexposed), but in the second I think we can appreciate the color realistically, and compared to uncle blue also.
