Not many reviews on this one yet it seems...
I've been debating between Alpha Dogs vs Hifiman 560 for my next headphone purchase (once I can save enough money that is, which may be awhile :P). I wonder if this is also worth considering.
(I currently have a few mid-fi cans: Fidelio X1, AKG K550, Sony XB500)
evil_mdWhich of those was your favorite?
I've owned the alpha dogs though I don't think I wrote any reviews on them. They're fairly neutral but there's distortion in the lower ranges.
I found the sound a bit thin on the alpha dogs. I haven't had the chance to try the HE560 since I moved to my Nobles
GL1TCH3DThe Fidelio X1 is my fav. It has the big sound stage of open cans but somehow manages to produce a healthy amount of quality bass. Very warm and musical. Comfortable too.
The AKG K550 also has a big sound stage, especially for closed headphones but is lacking in the low end and the treble is a bit sibilant at times, depending on the source.
Sony XB500 is known for one thing and does it well - bass. Sometimes a bit loose and boomy but works well if you're in the mood for it. The mids/highs aren't great but aren't terrible either.
Just my humble opinion.
Most of the reviews I've read talk about the Alpha Dogs as the best bang for the buck headphones at the higher end. I was also considering the Hifiman HE500 before the HE560 came out. I guess I'm looking for something like the Fidelio X1 (sound stage, musical, bass) with better detail retrieval and instrument separation.
I also have a couple of IEMS: Shure E500 and UE 700.
Bthrb4uThanks for the heads up.
Might have considered it before the Canadian dollar went into the toilet.
Now $500 usd will cost me ~$650 Cad before taxes, duties, shipping, etc. :(
evil_mdReally sucks about the canadian dollar right now...
I basically can't buy anything from massdrop because just paying the higher Canadian price here is cheaper on most items...
I would consider the alpha dogs a good pair of headphones.
I really liked the Shure 1840 as well. (The 1840 sounded more natural)
I currently have the K551 and that's a wonderful set. I pair it with the AK120 and it makes a great all around piece for gaming and music while my Nobles are out for reshelling.
I believe the K551 is slightly warmer and paired with the AK120 which is a more musical player, it comes out really strong, healthy and full. Doesn't feel like it's struggling to do anything.
