I was part of the initial run of these and for the price I was really disappointed with the lacquer finish issues and the resolution of "polish it yourself." The headphones themselves are fantastic sounding and my favorites for long music sessions. Unfortunately they don't look nearly as premium as they are because I was never able to polish the lacquer appropriately and they have a slight haze/matte look to them that looks more dingy than anything else. I know I could put in more effort on the polishing, but for several hundred dollars for a "finished" product it's ridiculous.
Anybody who has seen these babies in real life will have to agree with the first part of my title. These babies are downright sexy. The Purpleheart catches and reflects just about any light with such an unusual sheen that they attract attention (assuming they aren't coated in fingerprints).
If you like any music that has a bit of bottom end to it all you have to do is put them on your head for 30 seconds to agree with the second part of the title. These things pound. They have a fantastic bottom end that doesn't override the mid or upper... so you can be all about that bass and not ignore the treble.
They aren't perfect. The hinges definitely don't inspire confidence, but two years of regular use in they haven't lost it on me so I can appreciate that. I hated the pads initially since they were hard and didn't seem to sit all that comfortably. However, after a couple hundred hours of listening I realized that it no longer bothered me... and oh that bottom end.
Poor build quality, disintegrated just after warranty ended.
Bought these back in March 2019, and the connection between the headband and the actual earphones snapped just after the 3 year warranty ended, in May of 2021. I tried to repair these on my own and they were completely unsalvageable, while Drop Customer Service basically just threw their hands in the air and said there was nothing they could do. What a total ripoff, and why I'll never spend my money here again.
If I could own only one headphone, this would be it
It's nowhere near a neutral sound but thats what makes it so fun.
Just ensure you have a low impedance output DAC/Amp to avoid any issues with damping.
Been using these now for a few years non-stop and still in great condition
The Fostex TR-X00 is the best headphones I've owned to date.
They are extremely comfortable to wear, the sound is great (I have them connected to Schiit valhalla amp) and I use them both connected to my computer and to my turntable.
While I had an issue where the connector broke (it was my fault as the pair was dropped on the floor) but you guys helped me get a new one (thanx!).
Over all I cant recommend those enough.
These headphones not only look great, but sound amazing as well. Overall clarity across the treble, mids and bass, but also quite punchy in the low end. Definitely a "fun" pair of headphones as opposed to the more analytic pairs that I have for other uses (i.e. music recording).
Worth the money, imho.
Tactful V shape, worth every penny, parts are more durable than appears. Absolute quality product that gives me confidence in this line of headphones. I’d love to try the E-Mu series and the 610s after to see what this line can do. I advise caution with moving around while wearing these, as the clamp force is light enough to not secure the headphones on a sudden head turn. These are a sit down and enjoy headphone above all else.
Ear cups sit gently on your head without squeezing too hard. Just remember that the jack is not your standard 3.5mm. if you intend to use these with a 3.5mm, you will have to buy another headphone cord, or a converter
