People think Fostex TH-X00 Purpleheart and Mahogany are good value headphones, I think if its under or equal to $300, then I would consider good value. I got a hifiman he 500 under $350 so I'm not sure if the TH-X00 can compete with it. Anyone has experience with both?

qu11355Yes, and if the Sennheiser Orpheus 2 was $1000, I'd consider it good value too. So what's the relevance of comparing an open, discontinued (the HE-500 retailed for $450 new, back in the day, IIRC) headphone that you presumably bought used with the closed, current production (though limited) Fostex TH-X00?
By that logic you should wait till 2018, maybe you can get the TH-X00 for the same price too. Get back to me if there's another Fostex I'm not aware of currently with better "value".
Edit: On a more positive note, here's some headphones that I actually do consider interesting, at around the same price range. And just for fun, I'll actually keep it relevant, and only talk about closed models. The ZMF Headphones Vibro Mk II ($479), the Oppo PM-3 ($399) and the Audeze SINE ($449/499 depending on cable).
I have heard everything but the Sine, own a TH-X00 & ZMF, and think the TH-X00 is still great value, and with a good source/amp scales reasonably well. It's not a reference headphone/TOTL by a stretch, but it's really enjoyable with fun bass.

qu11355Good for you. But that's not a fair comparison. Or do you know any shop/seller that are still selling he500 at that price regularly ?

echinekoSine is on-ear though. It's interesting enough for me to get a pair for portable use, they will arrive at the end of the month though, so can't exactly compare them yet. I hope it's every bit as good as the hype is. :)

jeffriYes, I caught that after my initial post and went back to correct it. I'm very wary of hype, too. But I believe Tyll (from innerfidelity.com) has tried just about every headphone there is, by this point, and if's good enough to make his Wall of Fame recommendation, it should be worth checking out at the least :)
Did you go with the Cipher cable as well, or just the regular one?

echinekoI'm interested in the Cipher cable, but the one available for preorder here is the regular one, so no luck for me for the Cipher cable one. I guess I'll buy it separately whenever it's made available.
Yeah, Tyll review is convincing enough and my local community also review it in very positive light. I guess I won't go wrong with it, can't wait until the end of the month to try it out myself. :)
