I got my pair yesterday (total price in Canada turned out to be CAD$600 after $37.24 DHL customs charge) , and at first I was underwhelmed - they weren't even close to my HD650 with my Sabre DAC and Bravo V2 amp. But then I plugged them in directly into my Nexus 5X smartphone, and was amazed how much better they become. Still less detail, but thicker sound. HD650 are universal, but TH-X00 work well for certain type of music. Imagine Dragons, for example, or Vitalic. They are not better, and for these types aren't worse either - they are different and situational. I'm now wondering what amp I need for them for listening from computer. Aside from sound, the biggest problem is the cable. It's terrible - thick, long, heavy and non detachable. Which is bad, given how great they pair with my smartphone.

AlexGgggggI have been powering my phones from a DarkVoice 336SE tube amp and a Bravo audio S1 solid state amp. The Bravo Class A solid state amp can be had on the bay for around 80-90 dollars. It has a changeable op-amp so much like the Bravo tube amp you have you can change the sound with different op-amps.

AlexGgggggThe HD650 are best described as "inoffensive" while the TH-X00 are "fun and exciting". I personally own both and go back and forth between the two depending on what I listen to. As for the cable, Massdrop is just looking out for you. What if you were trapped at the bottom of a cliff? If you had the stock cable, you can use it as a psuedo grappling rope to scale i! ;) On a more serious note, I agree but I understand MD's logic; you can make a long cable shorter, but not a short cable longer. Being heavy, it always hangs straight instead of moving around. With the thick sleeve-ing, you also don't have to worry about microphonics. The connector termination I don't really understand. My best guess is they had a bunch of them from the Denon or TH-600 and didn't want to up the cost by re-terminating the connection.
