iSalehArtYou sure THESE are the cans you want to cheap out on? $100 amp for a $400 pair of headphones?? I should think you'd need to budget at least $400 to get the best out of these - I assume you're talking hi-fi head amp, not some tiddly, piddly portable amp, I mean who'd be so insane as to use these big cans with their default 1/4 inch jack for a portable? Get some decent IEMs for your portables, FPS! (For Portability's Sake), and if you don't have another $400 or don't want to spend that much for amplification, get a pair of awesome $200 headphones like the Senn 6XX and a $200-$300 amp/dac combo! For hi-fi head amps, look to Graham Slee, they make some very classy headphone and phono amps.

MassivePressureNot sure you are giving the best advice here. These headphones are very efficient, which is why I always list the quarter inch termination a mistake. I got a new cable made for mine and terminated to a 3.5mm jack and it sounds great with my FiiO X3ii. Considering you don't need a high end amp or any amps at all for these headphones, why waste the money? The HD6XX on the other hand, they are 300 ohms and NEED a proper amp to remove the infamous veil that they would otherwise have. With the TH-X00, the DAC is a much more worthwhile investment, which is why the m9xx is such a great pairing with it.

amoeba1126For me the issue is more that the headphone size does not really make these right for portability, they're not something you'd want to lug around in public, so if you're only even going to be listening to them at home, why limit the sound quality to what is always going to be a compromise by using (almost any) portable player unless you use a decent DAC to go with it by which point your set-up of two medium-small boxes, one tied to a mains socket, is hardly portable, so why not use a non-"portable" set-up - full sized (well, sort of midi-sized perhaps) hi-fi components, which will give more bang for the buck? It's not an issue of impedance for me, just of purity of signal, cleanliness of amplification, which pretty much always costs more than $100 to get you to a sweet spot where you don't feel you're compromising too much - maybe close to 100 if you're handy with a soldering iron and know electronics, and are lucky to stumble into some crazy bargain on a classic used DAC on ebay.

MassivePressureThe point of portability is not simply to listen on the go. The ability to take the TH-X00 to the office, on a business trip, or to the library is definitely something that a lot of people would be greatly interested in doing. This makes amps that don't require a power outlet a huge advantage. There are also some great portable amps/dac combos at affordable prices, such as the JDS Labs C5D or Denon DA-10.
To suggest that you need a $400 amp for the TH-X00 is pretty irresponsible IMO, especially since you can find amps that pair wonderfully with them for much less, such as the Fostex HP-A3 which you can often find as low as $200. Also, not everyone has $400 bucks to spend on an amp nor do they want a pair of open headphones like the HD6XX. Last but not least, there are plenty of amps that can provide clean sound provided you have a good DAC to begin with, which is much, much more important than a high priced amp.

amoeba1126Yeah, I did ignore that aspect of portability, being a bit of a homebody, but you're right, plus I don't have actual listening experience of the Fostex cans, so you can disregard some of what I say on that score.

iSalehArtHad very good results with Dragonfly Red + Fostex. Enough juice even when driven from an cheapo Android phone, fits budget and sure is portable.

MassivePressureI agree with your points. Thankfully, I'm not too much into audiophile headphones. But from my limited experience with high-end fountain pens (stock pens, not the uber-expensive collectible version), it's often go high-end or go home, in the realm of indulgence. I would suggest to just dip your toes slightly in the water and save up for the real deals. Skip the intermediate-level phones if you're really into it and plan to budget for high-end ones.

RubiIf you are asking about the quarter inch to 3.5mm adapter, I used to use this one by Sennheiser.

Currently, I use a custom cable from PETERK on Etsy that terminates to a 3.5mm jack as I had the detachable cable mod performed on my headphones.

Bailey2013Here is the thing, not all folks pursue perfect sound. Strictly speaking, most true audiophiles probably don't like the TH-X00 as they are very much colored. The TH-X00 are however, very fun headphones to listen to without the need to spend money on amps and DAP's. If we are talking about the HD650, Hifiman HE-500, or LCD-3 on the other hand, you all but have to have a good amp and great DAC to properly utilize them. I used to rock a pair of LCD-2's on a Burson Soloist and Jolida FX for example and loved the sound. Unfortunately, that was a strictly for use at home setup and as I started to travel more for my job, I quickly looked towards more portable options. The TH-X00 I can wear at work or on the plane or take with me to the hotel, without needing a bunch of other stuff to sound great. Is it as good as my old LCD-2.1 PF's? Not by a long shot, but I still enjoy what I hear and have a whole lot more time to use them.

amoeba1126I think it also depends on the genre. If a person is blasting high-volume rock music produced by the typical 4-piece band, then precision and clarity makes little difference. However, if you are listening to classical then you are hearing ensembles of all-acoustic instruments that play huge and complex variations of tone and intensity. Here the standards are much higher, sloppiness is more easily revealed, and greater precision and clarity is required in reproduction equipment.

DenonFanboyFrom an objective standpoint, there are multiple cheaper options that are also more than good enough, some which are far more portable than 2 separate desktop components.
From a subjective standpoint, I don't like most Schiit amps outside of the Vali 2 and Lyr series. At $100 however, the Magni is good value.

amoeba1126Future proofing is what I try to look at as well, nothing worse than selling off stuff for a loss because it wont work well with a new direction you are taking gear wise.
