Do you guys use this as a utility knife or carry a separate utility knife?

Once you get used to it opening letters, boxes, cutting twine or rope or stuff like that is fairly easy, at least with the larger 479 model. It's awkward at first, but that doesn't last, you just need to learn how to use the curvature of the blade to let it do its work and then you might even find it an improvement for many tasks. I wouldn't bother personally packing a separate knife unless I knew I had some task that really requires a straight edge or a knife with some belly to it, like slicing. It all boils down to what you do in a typical day. I'd hate to try and do crackers and cheese with this thing, but it opens boxes from Amazon and manila mail envelopes with equal ease.

Can't carry it in NJ. It's a "fighting knife" with "no explainable lawful purpose".

Not that it would get you anywhere with a cop, but the karambit-style knife was originally used for farming: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karambit

Same thing's true of the kukri -- it was and is a Nepalese peasant tool that they used throughout the day as kind of a utility tool, on everything from chopping wood to making dinner. But for some reason when the po po see you with a foot long bent steel blade in your hand they don't go 'ah, it's just a rural villager who knows the value of a multipurpose knife' so much as they go for their sidearm.

Well spotted. Many people equate size with danger when it comes to knives, because we grew up watching swordfights on TV, and bigger is always better. But some folks will tell you that geometry is what makes a blade dangerous, and there are few knives more optimized for violence in an enclosed space than a traditional karambit. The Fox folders are a couple steps back from full on traditional karambits - for instance they don't have a sharpened top edge, for shredding forearms when people block, and of course they're frame locks and not fixed blades like old school bits are -- but they're still quite wicked.

Oh yeah shit man, I can imagine people getting cut to pieces with these. That's why I just settled on a pepper spray; I can't afford to get involved with hospital bills and court cases.
