The cut of those jeans is impressive, and shows the power of the blade. The original technique is to cut the insides of the thighs. The technique was created by people who used Karambits with both sides sharpened and for use against opponents that either didn't wear pants or the material was much thinner than jeans. Nor did they have that seam that most jeans have. He made that cut standing, taking a long swing that would be difficult to match if you have to crouch and extend to make a low cut. A short, quick, upward cut won't have that much power. The original strike would be two very quick strikes using both sides of the blade. So, the the modified strike with a folding Karambit would be to target just one inner thigh. (If they are wearing jeans, I'd look for a better target.) If the opponent is just wearing shorts or khakis, the strike would be more likely to be effective. If you plan to carry a Karambit for self defense, you need some instruction, practice, and a training blade. This blade was designed for Fox by one of the former great custom Karambit makers, Rich Derespina. It's a great design. If you want to learn about Karambits, check out the books and DVDs from Steve Tarani. Or, if you are lucky, you can attend one of the few classes he teaches each year.
