I saw this FTV months ago and the MSRP was set at $34. And then when I saw Dark Depths and Merit Lage token was in it I was really excited. Then the preorders hit and the price was $80 + on almost every single online and physical MTG market. While $69.99 is $10 off, it's still unbelievable. MTG is getting ridiculous with its pricing. The community is screwing itself with this type of price gouging. For God sake, the Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price is $34.......this isn't Wizzard's fault, it's the vendor's fault. I want this almost exclusively for Dark Depths and the Merit Page token but I might as well just buy the real deals for $80.

SHADOWCLOUDHang on, it actually is Wizards' fault. What do you expect the price to settle at if they stuff $70 in a box? Wizards can only set a price floor (via distributor cost), not a price ceiling.
If Wizards actually wanted these FTV sets to sell at $35, they would either choose cards that are worth $35 total (or like 20% more and let the card prices fall to $35) or have an unlimited print run for the set.

jxliuThey could also ship them to big box stores like Wal-Mart or Target where they wouldn't even know the value of the cards and just sell them at MSRP. I bit the bullet an bought one yesterday off of ebay at 60$ and they had already started the shipping process last night.
Locally I haven't seen them preordered for less than 70$ so I don't blame Massdrop or the people who bought this on the price offered.

SHADOWCLOUDBut no one seems to complain when booster boxes are suppose to sell for $144.00 and they can get them for $89.99

ShadowhealsEbay sellers know the value of the cards though, so if this were sold at Wal-Mart/Target/etc and available on those stores' websites, they would be bought out instantly. If it were only available in-store, then yeah, there would be some chance to snag one at MSRP.
The arbitrage is real. :(

jxliuActually they can set maximums. It is done in the retail industry all the time. The problem is getting retailers on board with it. You have to make all the acounts sign an agreement to set their prices within x% of MSRP. Since wizards does not sell direct to stores, it makes this harder to control, but it is still possible.

AurilliaYes, it does happen in retail, but I don't think it happens for anything as liquid as Magic cards. Because of all of the secondary sellers, the only real way for Wizards of the Coast to limit prices is by printing more.
