i8765I don't know that the $99 MSRP is entirely justified, but the reason you don't want to lay headphones down on a table surface is that it can damage them. Depending on the particular model of headphones, many are not designed to flex that way consistently. Take for example many of the Grado headphones which have a fixed Y on the cable and free-turning earpieces. If you lay these down on a table, over time, it can strain the fixed Y fraying your cables and causing a short. I know, it's happened to me before.

When you hang your headphones on a stand it allows you reduce cable tangles (or getting your cables laying over electrical cables nearby) and keeps them in a position where the earpieces are not strained and are aligned as they would be worn (which is how they're designed to be aligned).
