Anyone have any recommendations for a nicer set of tubes for this amp? My current setup is a APPJ PA1501A I love this amp but don’t have many tubes to choose from. I’m hoping this FX Audio amp will allow me to dive into sampling a variety of tubes and their accompanying sounds. I saw some tubes in the comments but I’m a bit clueless when it comes to choosing the proper ones. Any advice or references to help me in the future would be greatly appreciated!

chance912I find that the best bang for your buck is in NOS Soviet-era tubes. For the 6J1, the most cost-effective replacements are Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV. solid tubes with good body and excellent detail. Yugoslavia 6HM5 tubes in my experience have more of a tubby, gooey tube sound if you're looking for something really relaxed for a similar cost. For the 6P1 tubes, there are plenty of good options, but I hear similarly good things about Svetlana 6P1P tubes ("Winged C" inscription). Like these: Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV
Yugoslavia 6HM5
Svetlana 6P1P There are better-sounding options for more money, but to me getting really solid-sounding and long-lasting tubes for $10 a pair can't be beaten. The 6P1 tube is not a direct equivalent to the 6AQ5 or EC90, the pinout is different and will require an adapter like this: 6AQ5 to 6P1 adapter
6V6/6P6S to 6P1 adapter I have had good results on my Little Dot MK2 using those adapters. For example I'm running Lorenz C3G tubes in 6J1 slots using these adapters and it sounds amazing: C3G to 6J1/6AK5/5654 adapter So with those adapters you could run some beautiful tubes if you wanted to: RCA 6AQ5 Black Plates
Reflector Saratov 6P6S
Lorenz C3G
Siemens C3G In my experience, the Siemens C3G are pretty neutral while the Lorenz have more of a classic "euphonic" tube sound with nice emphasis on the bass and mids without depriving you of treble detail.

m_sutsThank you for all of the information! I’m very excited to try out a variety of tubes you mentioned. In your experience is it worth trying a set of the higher end tubes with such an inexpensive amp or should I save the nicer tubes for when I upgrade to something at a higher level? My current amp has the ge tubes that I love listening to jazz with but sometimes the bass seems to be missing.

chance912The amp is cheap, so don't spend too much. Makes the Soviet tubes that much more enticing since the price to performance ratio fits with the amp.

m_sutsare you saying that 6HM5 is a drop in replacement for 6J1?

chance912I have 2 Fx-audio tube buffers and I would recommend GE JAN and Mullard tubes. They are reasonably priced and they leave Russian tubes (including military ones) in the dust. Though to be fair, I have to add that Russian tubes are big, big improvement over stock Chinese ones. For a moment I also had Telefunken/AEG NOS tubes, and as long as they are somewhat more detailed than Mullards, the price is ridiculous.

DaaDaaYep, they are drop in replacements. The tube itself is a bit longer and skinnier but they're compatible.

m_sutsSo I have been waiting several weeks for my tubes to come in. I ordered several that you recommended from a supplier in Russia. Today they finally came in and I couldn’t wait to give them a listen. Popped the Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV into the 6J1 slots then added the adapters and Reflector Saratov 6P6S tubes into the 6P1 slots. Fired up the amp for things to warm up and a few seconds later I noticed this beautiful plasma looking glow coming from the left Voskhod tube. I was thinking to myself how awesome does that look I’ve never seen a tube look like that before. Then my excitement was crumbled by a snap crackle and pop that came from the left speaker followed by me ripping the power cord from the back of the amp as if it was going to explode. After looking more closely I noticed a small crack at the base of the tube and all of the internals seem to be leaning to one side. Do you think this was a shipping flaw, or possibly a tube installation flaw on my part? I now have the original Chinese tubes back in the 6J1 slots and everything seems to be working properly.

chance912Jesus, that's scary. Sorry that happened. It's very possible that it was a tube defect or damaged in shipping. An installation error shouldn't have caused that. Check with the vendor, maybe send a pic or two of the damaged tube and explain what happened. If they test their tubes before sending them, they should have no problem replacing it for you.
