We have the previous model of this and have found it to be very useful. We both have smartphones, I even have offline maps, but that doesn't guarantee you will be able to get turn-by-turn directions. We have been in many situations where we had no service, or low battery on our phones with no charger. I particularly like the voice activation on the Garmin. When we traveled to Italy this summer I simply loaded the Italy maps. The Garmin was 10 times more useful than our smartphones. IMHO, phones are an OK backup to a real GPS, but they will never replace it.

gmcnair88Another thing I notice missing on Google Maps is the speed limit indicator and current speed.
