The suribachi (the thing everyone is calling a mortar) is on the smallish side, imo. I think the 7+ inch versions are much more common, useful, and easy to use. If you have an Asian market near you, I'd recommend checking it out first. The ginger graters are usually made out of tin and sell for just a couple of dollars (although they often do carry ceramic versions). Suribachi's are harder to find (unless you happen to have a Japanese market near you), but they're also usually not too expensive.
