HiFiMan products from my experience are a disgrace. Mine have ALL fell apart or sound had become distorted in less than 1-6 months. All thru Amazon uK.
re-400 left ear broke apart within 6 months
he-400s sound became distorted at 60% above volume in 3 weeks
he-400s bought again as loved the sound when it worked... and I'm SURE they gave me the exact same pair back as the volume still became distorted at 60% volume and above. I know it wasn't my gear as I tried with many sources and my friend didn't have the same issues with his.
mattc50101Yeah they got that history, and I believe it, but I can say that the 4XX does not look or feel cheap. I've had mine for nearly 6 months and I use it regularly--it's not falling apart and it sounds fine... maybe because Massdrop was involved?
Great offer - I´m from Germany and just bought these two headphones here. I use them in combination with a La Figaro 336 classic tube headphone amp (similar to the DarkVoice 336).
Only got these for around two weeks now, so this shouldn´t be viewed as a review, but these cans have a really great sound (once broken in a bit, which might at least some hours) and a good bass response compared to some Beyerdynamic Headphones (but not the bass head type and not bleeding in other frequencies, just about the right amount for my taste). They are fast an exact, I absolutely enjoy listening to them with about all types of music. Both headphones are not dark sounding, yet not too bright - they don´t pierce your ears with damn high frequencies. Some Beyerdynamics are a bit harsh in that aspect - these are not...but, in the end it comes down to the complete hifi-chain.
I use my headphones to listen to LPs - although these headphones show a lot of small details, you can still enjoy listening to bad recordings (I have lots of cheaply produced Punk LPs...) on the other side they absolutely shine with good recordings like classical music, jazz, blues, electronic stuff and whatever. You can´t really go wrong with these until you´re a basshead.
Both weight close to nothing and the clamping-force is really low which is an absolut joy if you want to listen for hours. The 450s clamping force is close to zero (at least on my ones) - the earpads used on this ones are narrower than the ones on the open 400 - but, keep in mind that these are changeable and there are lots of others to test out for adjusting the sound and comfort to your own tastes - I´ll definitely try other combinations in the future. There are options on the webpage of the manufacturer and as far as I know others like the ones from Beyerdynamic also fit.
MightyChris...just changed the earpads from the close 450 to the open 400, the 400 sounds even better now - more details, more realistic, some frequencies seem to be better presented now and once again there´s a good bass response and there are no piercing highs - still no regrets, would buy these things again in a heartbeat. Great quality for a great price and Made in Germany. It´s definitely worth trying out some different earpads!
esjroMike hasn't been reviewing for several years. I know that Lieven likes the super-sizzly Beyer T90 et al, but I don't remember if Mike was the same way. Anyway, that preference for bright sound might have a lot to do with Headfonia's rating as 'dull' or blunted.
Cool drop Massdrop. I applaud you guys for choosing a cool headphone that is far from main stream. A little too much for me to grab to have as a like tenth headphone unfortunately. Hope this drop happens though, very good brand
UOIMI have no doubt MassDrop would love to offer more brands. Audeze is a unique company, and how they distribute their cans means it wouldn't be easy. I would be surprised of they talked to them about it and would probably try again. I'm not sure what "jurks" are, but I hardly think the HD6XX is unpopular, with several thousand sold. The tech and wood going into the LCD-4 means it might cost them 2 thousand to just manufacture it and cover the years of R&D that went into just making it. You'll never see that wood version of it below $3000 used. I want great expensive stuff cheap too but you have to be realistic here.
SinoriDetatchable cable and all metal vs what looks to be all plastic, with attached cables. Sound-wise the X2's are doing their own thing unlike all other headphones.
While most headphones are tuned by graph, the X2's are tuned by what sounds good. So on a graph they look like they're a mess, but when you put them on the sound signature makes sense. It's bass heavy, huge sound stage, and it's a ton of fun. Definitely not analytical headphones.
I'm looking to get a closed back set of headphones for under $300. I am considering these, but does anyone think I should be looking at other comparable closed back headphones?
A-RadBang and Olufsen Beoplay H6 gen 2's.. Hands down nothing comes close in that price range (or anything I've yet to come across several ranges above it). I have the ATH-MX30x's, 40x's and 50x's (actually prefer the 30x's as they sound more natural and less engineered, Senn Momentums gen 1 and 2, Beyer DT990 pros, HD600's.. The H6's blow them all out of the water sound wise in every conceivable sense. I do recommend replacing the cable with a good aftermarket one which can be found for the cheap on Amazon, because the factory cable is crap. And a good cable made a world of difference. For a closed back they have a brilliant sound stage, and the detail and clarity is phenomenal. They're never harsh or sibilant and the extension is great both ways. They're also the first pair of headphones that if anything ever happened to them I would instantly place an order for a new pair in the time it takes to go online and do it. They're very light, comfy, and gorgeous to look at.
Here is my totally personal sound preference review (I like Treble and Mids and not heavy bass). I have the GMP400 which I bought here on Massdrop. I also have the Beyerdynamic DT880s (relatively new, less than 10 hours of listening), Sennheisser HD600s (Very old pair with hundreds of hours of listening), B&O H6 ver 2 (used daily at work) and HifiMann HE400I (probably less than 40 hours of listening). Build quality is plastic with the two cords instead of a single cord. However these are exceptionally light. Lightest off all my headphones. They are very comfortable. Sound quality in my opinion only is better than the DT880s (my DT880s have a high treble sound which the GMP400s don't). Sound Quality is less than my HD600s, B&O H6 and HE400I. Consider though that I paid $500 years ago for my HD600, and $300 each for the H6 and HE400I. These are 1/2 that price. For 1/2 that price they are very good. If i didn't have the other 3 more expensive ones these GMP400s would probably be my favorite. As elira said below in reply to Boombap the have "detail in the sound" and are a very nice pair with a reasonable price. They are worth it.
