So I just get back from grocery shopping. Email from Drop: the Gevril watch will end soon!
My thought...
Hallelujah! Can I get an amen from the congregation!
Holly cow, I can't believe I just paid thirty-five hundred dollars for this watch and here it is on MD for only $729!!!
Okay, kidding ;- ) I didn't really pay thirty-five hundred dollars for this watch--it's not really my style.
But what if it's your style, I mean suppose you've been looking for a nice aviation-themed watch--what's a fella supposed to do, shell out $729 for a watch he's only going to wear now and then?
Well, maybe--if you're made of dough, but what if you're just a regular kind of guy? I mean, $729 might be your car payment, or maybe a memorable night out with that cute brunette you've been eying in the cubical next door? Are you gonna blow all that cash on trendy watch, instead of a car payment or a hot date?
Hell no you're not!
But still, it's a pretty nice looking watch, isn't it? Yes, it is--but YOU, being the saucy and suave kind of guy YOU are, can do better, can't you? Yes you can, because you're hip to this way-cool website where this snappy little company that hardly anyone knows about, sells amazingly inexpensive watches, with good movements, for dirt cheap! So when you want a cool aviator-style watch that looks just like this ridiculously over-priced number MD is trying to sell you, you chose instead, a SHARK PILOT WATCH for only $129! Which, by the way, comes with a perfectly acceptable Seiko NH35A Automatic Movement (24 Jewels, 21'600 bph, 40 hours power reserve) and that get's the job done just as well, doesn't it?
Yes it does! And, by the way, you have your choice of several aviation dial styles, including, with or without a date complication, don't you? Yes you do, damn it!
So here you go, check out these perfectly acceptable, alternative aviation watches, and save yourself six-hundred big ones while you're at it!
Perhaps--if you're compensating for other shortcomings?
Kidding, while not exactly a fan of 38s my self, there is a constant chorus of small-wristed gentlemen on this site who complain bitterly about large watches. For that group, especially those who aren't flying nighttime bombing runs over Dusseldorf, a 38mm flyboy homage is probably more wearable. Not to mention those Sharks are dirt cheap!

RayFyea and that same crowd is now complaining about a 38mm chrono.
There’s just no pleasing some people’s children.
AshyamVastly overstated "base value", massive markdowns across the board even in their own store? Not harsh. Abuse of "Swiss Made", how do we really know what the build quality is, what makes you think the parts are sourced from anything but China? Swiss movement can be a standard grade 2824, which is not particularly good (+/- 20 SPD). A step up from an 8000 series Miyota or NH35? Sure, but not that big a step. The bigger factor is the marketing, trying to create the impression they buyer's getting some great deal.
How...how many red flags can we find?
--Old brand name, long defunct, suddenly "revitalized"...so a total zombie brand, as far as I can tell.
--ridiculously huge catalog for a such a young company
--a lot of really terrible designs. Combine with the above? Can we say Chinese parts?
--completely BS MSRPs. Check Jomashop...every man's watch was listed with *at least* a 60% discount.
--ridiculous, over-the-top marketing. YMMV here.

If we buy the movement was actually "created by"...ambiguous there, did he design it or just assemble it, the old Shinola question...the person mentioned, and the whole thing's a homage to his grandfather, well....I suppose. But lordy it sounds like a song and dance. Beyond that, it's a simple 3-hander with date. They tell us NOTHING about the movement.
Far as I'm concerned...this is an Intervention Watch. If a friend is thinking of buying? Intervention time. This is the kind of brand that Moser's protests about "Swiss Made" were aimed against, IMO.
Oh, for sure, I think there's better out there at 750; as I noted, I wouldn't consider ANY Gevril at ANY price, personally. Too many red flags, of a type I personally find particularly odious.
Yes, the SARBs are still out there...but not for long, I think, at least in the US. And yes, I'm aware of the reputation of 6Rs to run better than spec after adjustment. That's pushing to be an expert consideration, tho. Still: yeah, if you can get one of the remaining SARs with a 6R, and can adjust or get it adjusted locally and you're good with that...they're steals. BUT they also don't define the market. They've always been serious outliers. The Steinhart might be a better example, unless you got it gray market AND on sale. Then it's not representative of market conditions...it's "strike while the iron is hot!" :) That's what convinced me to pull the trigger on my Railmaster earlier this year...the price was just too good to pass on.
I never count pre-owned because that's never an apples to apples comparison with a new watch. Now, to be sure: Gevril puts such an absurd MSRP that it's impossible to assert what fair market should be. Even gauging from Jomashop's rather common 75% off, or the price here, isn't particularly representative because there's the emotional aspect of "oh wow look at that discount!" and the thrill of the deal, even if it's largely a ploy. COULD it be worth around 750? If the case, dial and hands are good...it's possible, speaking generally. This one? Heck no.
CraigLewisRailmaster awesome i got a smp300 and a pelagos at 40% off retail full sets 5 year on the omega 2 years on the Tudor manufacture warranty I agree with all you said next for me is the moon watch i really like omega I don’t think steinhart sells grey market only gnome I think (spelling?) ps condition unworn
brainwave;) So many companies are either piecing together earlier versions or just copying. I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but it's here so I don't get bent about it. Usually when I see a watch I love, it's been done before.
