Just a friendly reminder X99/2011 are "dead" in that the current CPUs are the only CPUs that will work in that socket. In 2H 2017 Intel is moving to the X299 chipset and the 2066 socket (instead of 2011-3) with Kabylake-X and Skylake-X.
Not shitting on X99 (I own an MSI X99 board and a 5820k), but it is something to be aware of, in ~6 months there will be a new socket and new chipset that replaces this.

KabooseIf you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll never buy anything.

CzexSure, and that's why I bought X99 and a 5820k over a year ago.
Now that you're ~6 months out from a new platform however it's something to keep in mind.
If you are on a P4 EE from 2006, yeah you probably shouldn't bother waiting for X299 because X99 is already a HUGE upgrade. But if you're on Sandybridge or similar, I'd advise waiting unless you NEED an upgrade immediately for whatever reason.

KabooseWhere did you find this information that Intel is moving to the X299 chipset and the 2066 socket with Kabylake-X and Skylake-X ?

RandallShoreThere have been varying leaks over the past few months from different industry sources and they all point to Q2-Q3 2017 launch for Socket 2066 and X299. Not to mention all the other launches expected in January for the normal desktop line. Here is one of the documents referencing X299 from late October.
search
the part numer GL82XXXX where the X's refer to the chipset. X299 is high end desktop (HEDT) C422 is server/workstation (xeons, ECC memory, dual LAN, etc) Q250/270 and H270 are consumer non-overclocking (with differences in features like PCI slots or more onboard SATA, etc) Z270 is consumer overclocking B250 is business (non overclocking consumer-level with some remote management support and similar business oriented features)
X299 is coming, it's just a matter of the exact release date. It's expected Q2-Q3 which is why in my first post I simply said 2H 2017.

KabooseOr it's something to keep in mind for anticipated price drops.

verlorenI wouldn't rely on huge price drops though, they're kinda random on PC parts. Even some of the second gen i7s are still sold for around 50% of their original price tag.

AlerionI would expect MoBo price drops to be greater than CPU, as chipsets tend to have newer features with each generation. It might not be as much for this board though, because it's the last X99/2011 socket.

verlorenYeah just look on ebay at X79 motherboard prices, the HEDT motherboards tend not to fall too much in price. Mostly because in 5 years the Xeons from the X99 generation will hit ebay for $100-200 a pop for an originally $4000 server CPU. So tech guys like to buy the used Xeon for $150, then a used motherboard to put it in. So the used HEDT motherboard market is almost always fairly stable.
