It's a f*cking box. Drop really should have made it box opt-in vs. opt-out. We purchased keycaps. Not cardboard. Is there any place we can check the status for this buy that doesn't involve searching through 3000 comments manually?

mechanicaThey did make the box option opt-in vs opt-out...they sent emails and posted about it months ago. Also if you read the replies to the first comment in this thread you would see that they are now sending updates about a few different drops including this one through this thread https://drop.com/talk/63324/pre-order-status-update-thread

jebertNo -- I'm saying the box should have been opt-in. The box was opt-out, meaning the user had to specifically ask to not have the box. They should have made the option which got folx their purchase ASAP the default, not punishing people after they've already purcahsed.

mechanicaThere's no punishing going on here man, you joined a group buy before a global pandemic. Nobody could've foreseen delays of this magnitude. Yes, you were given the option to opt-in or opt-out of getting the box and getting the caps in bags instead, but if you didn't respond to the e-mail they sent out to get them in bag, that means you were automatically opted-in to get them in the box. Way I see it, best case scenario, sig plastics ships everyone else keycaps within the next 2-4 weeks, cause Kevin still hasn't updated us on sig plastics contacting them in the past 48-hours. Worst case, it could be a couple more months. I highly doubt the second case though.

mechanicaI just missed the email, never would have chosen to wait for the box personally since it will just go into the attic in case I might one day sell them or something. Drop is kind of screwed either way in terms of trying to find a good solution as they’ll piss off half of people no matter what they do. We just haven’t had a worldwide cataclysm for long enough that no one has a reset switch for expectations in their brain when something like this happens. Frankly, with all these supply chain disruptions and uncertainty causing businesses to shutter all all over, I’d say it’s a happy outcome just to get things from GBs at all. Perhaps if Drop’s in the same or similar situation again, a better default choice for those who don’t respond would be ship the product fastest, but then for them let the box be an optional ship to you at the shipping cost if you opt in later. Or even better - have Drop consider contingencies like this and work the choices into the purchase phase. Group buys in the model train hobby do this pretty often, asking you whether you want to cancel an order if it’s delayed, or if the buyer wants to have things shipped separately at separate shipping cost, or whatever. But then again, what are the odds of another worldwide pandemic hitting during a group buy? Even then you’d have someone else being pissed for their reasons, equally valid from their perspective.

griponrealityThis is how I'd like to see it. Pandemic or not -- delays happen all the time in group buys. They should have options in place at purchase time for delays related to packaging, manufactures defect, etc. I understand that they sent out an email, but the fact that on-time shipping was opt-out by default was a terrible decision. This should have been opt-in (box should have been not included by default) and then people who wanted the box should have been forced to wait, given this was a buy for caps, not a box. It really feels like Drop is trying to make group buys feel more like a regular purchase to make things easier for people. But in reality, they're making things too hard by removing any ability to handle common group buy pitfalls.

mechanicaI agree with you. I did follow the updates and opted out of getting the box. This amount of delay is ridiculous. But, you know it's damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they had opted people out by default, some would be complaining in here that they received keycaps in a bag and not in a box as promised. The whole thing is a fiasco. GMK ships in boxes, but they go in the trash as soon as you get them. Most likely they were broken during shipping and if you keep them around, silverfish will eat them. MT3 comes in boxes, but they move around even from row to row. It's nice to ship them like that, but useless to keep them in. Ironically it's the less expensive keycap manufacturers who ship in the best boxes. MaxKey has the best boxes, then KAT. I keep those in boxes, the rest in baggies. Including GMK, the so-called top of the bill keycap manufacturer. They're overrated in so many ways.
