I was planning to connect my M9xx rca outputs in the back to some powered studio monitors such as the Yamaha HS8s or the Focal Alpha 65s. Do you think this will result in a good sound or should I invest in something else for sending a balanced signal to the montiors? I'm worried after hearing reports of people using unbalanced cables and having a lot of interference coming through the speakers.
I was a bit of a nOOb when it came to audio equipment when I purchased the m9xx and did not realize that it only had unbalanced outputs /sadface
Any help or advise would be appreciated.

PixelPusherXXI use my m9xx line output to Yamaha HS-8 active monitors. I've used both the TRS and XLR inputs on the HS-8 and have not had any noise or interference issues. The image and soundstage are excellent.

DeLucaI'm really glad to hear that. In fact, I think I'll purchase some HS-8s today! So, did you use rca to TS cables?

PixelPusherXXYes, I have used both rca-to-TS and rca-to-XLR cables. Both are quiet and I couldn't hear any difference.
Once you have the HS-8's properly positioned, the imaging and soundstage are amazing. I prefer the F4 filter setting on the m9xx when using the HS-8 monitors.

DeLucaI have a pair of JBL LSR305's coming tomorrow to pair with the m9xx. Since the volume control on the JBL's is rather inconveniently placed on the rear of the speaker just like the Yamaha's, and since Grace recommends a volume level of 90 on the m9xx, how are you controlling your volume level? Set the m9xx at 90 and speaker volume at max and control volume with your music player? (I use fb2k)

ibbilboRegarding m9xx use with active monitors, Caleb Roberts addresses this (see his message above) better than I can from a scientific and measurement perspective.
What I can add is that I use the m9xx volume knob in its normal manner and have zero issues with noise or sound quality. I set the HS-8 monitor volume to the intermediate detent. This gives me excellent volume control and incremental adjustment and allows headphone volume to be approximately the same.
I use an iPhone 6s as my music source. If I use USB input into the m9xx (using Apple's CCK Lightning cable), the signal from the iPhone is a fixed signal level. Volume control can only be done using the m9xx volume knob.
I also use an Apple TV (3rd gen) and optical TosLink to the m9xx. This gives me the ability to use my iPhone and iPad to send a wireless signal to the m9xx. In this case, the iPhone or iPad will vary the volume level to the Apple TV.

DeLucaI'm happy to report my concerns about volume controls were, in practice, a non-issue. The JBL's perform perfectly with the m9xx and I am blown away with how good the pair sounds. Setting the speakers at about 75% I reach volume parity with X00's so I can listen to headphones or speakers at the same SPL and adjust volume of both with the m9xx. Perfect! Tip for external speaker users: If you are using the crossfeed feature with your headphones, turn it off when you listen to speakers. They don't need it. :)
