Handcrafted in Italy’s Aosta Valley, the Grifos Calypso fountain pen is made from galuchat—also known as shagreen, or stingray leather. Originally used by Japanese samurai to improve the grip of their sword handles, galuchat is also valued for its beauty and water resistance, and has been a popular material for bookbinding and furniture making since the 17th century Read More
I wish I would have opened this box as soon as it arrived but I receive so many pens for reviews and feedback that I let this one go to the later pile. One thing I am extremely happy is that I did not spend the money for the gold nib option. This pen is so poorly constructed that pen would have been better made in China. It is a shame that such a pen comes from a country known for quality craftsmanship. Upon close inspection of the pen I received the silver foil that is glued to the grip section is poorly done (see Image). It’s upsetting to me that quality control did not catch it before it shipped so that leaves me to believe that quantity vs quality is their motto. The leather on the barrel has one seam glued over another causing a hump that is annoying. The leather could have been cut so that the seams met along side each other, but I guess that was too complicated. The nib…well I won’t go into that, it’s just a waste of time at this point. Overall the pen was not worth the $189.99 spent. Maybe the leather was worth more than the care taken to make this pen. Truly a shame.
NOTE: The uploaded image does not show clearly and as much as I tried the reflective surface played havoc with focusing. I did my best with what I have, sorry... I am no photographer.
DaddyDiBsYou are welcome, would be interesting meet you. Just contact me when you are closing to arrive (some days before). I do not suggest you to drink our Coffee with Sambuca, after what you have wrote with poor accurancy on our handmade pen you would not be sure it is indeed Sambuca... ;-)
Slightly wonky shaped pen but writes beautifully. The material is unusual to say the least but certainly seems solid. It doesn’t feel like any other material I have seen on pens. Minus one star for the clip which doesn’t seem as solid as the rest of the pen.
It's not what I thought it would be. Granted, I've never before seen, let alone handled a Grifos pen. So it was not completely unexpected. But I really thought it would a notch better, qualitywise. The way the cap screws in is really cheap in terms of smoothness. These are first impressions though. Since I bought it as a present I haven't yet tried it myself. Probably the nib is magnificent and it flows smoothly as it glides over the paper. I sincerely don't know it. What I can say is both, the converter and the enclosed cartridges are low quality, as is the packaging.
I was hoping for an overall better quality fountain pen.
