I bought this unit direct from Shenzhen Audio about a month ago. It is well built and almost half what the Singxer SU-6 costs, BUT there are known firmware issues with this unit and Gustard does not seem to be in a rush to fix them. That said, if you are looking for a stellar sounding DDC, you would be hard pressed to find one that sounds this good for the price. I use it with my Audio-GD R8 DAC with FW v1.4PSA via I2S and the sound is transparent, very 3-dimensional, huge soundstage, crisp, clean delineation of notes, and very resolving. I also tried it with my Topping DX7s via digital cable and it sounded better than it ever did. I love the sound this gives me enough to deal with the FW issues.
Doesn't Audio-GD DAC have a USB input? Why bother with I2S if you can connect DAC directly via USB?
To bypass AGD's shitty Amanero USB implementation obviously. It is a known fact AGD dac's sound best through their I2S over HDMI input.
The R8 via I2S sounds way better than the Amanero board, and I convert everything to DSD512 and the U16 is far superior to the R8’s USB input.
As far as I can tell from my experiences the issues are only when you run DSD. I only have a few test tracks in that format but can report I have never had an issue running 24 bit PCM files and the baulk of my library is red book CD rips so it works for me flawlessly. And the 1A firmware solves the channel problem with L&R channel reversal and has internal pin conversions for PS Audio, LKS, and Holo via firmware when using I2S.
I agree. When I first got my R8, I tested it on some PCM material with the U16 and it seemed to play fine. I did not do a long-term test so I can't say anything more about the U16 for PCM. From everything I have read on other forums, it seems to be fine, although I don't know which FW versions they are using. The most recent version: 1.61 does not work with the Audio-GD R8.
Firmware 1.61 has issues playing PCM files above 96kHz. FW 1.4 does not. I use BNC/SPDIF out.
