$70 for a carabiner? I'm sorry but I don't quite get the joke here. I bought a $70 Leatherman and it came with a similar stainless steel carabiner (with bottle opener) as a free accessory.

These are nice looking and seem well designed, but they are also really just a keychain. $70 is a lot of money for a keychain.

whackoTitanium stuff is expensive. It's significantly more difficult to manufacture than any of the steel alloys. The item you linked is bulk stamped (not machined), which is why it's $8. If it had been CNC milled it would be much more expensive. And if titanium, even more so.
Edit: These carabiners are EDM wire cut, which is just stupid expensive but produces amazing results.

DataYeah but stainless steel is stronger than titanium, and since it is thinner the weight is almost the same.
I get that titanium is a "premium" material (whatever that means) but at a certain point the materials and manufacturing processes employed don't add enough value to a product for it to justify its own price tag. Being made out of titanium doesn't make this carabiner a better keychain, nor does the amount of titanium used in the construction of this small object justify a $70 price tag.
I mean, here is another Titanium Carabiner: http://www.fenixoutfitters.com/titantium-carabiner-4-cm-x-2-35-cm/
It definitely isn't as fancy or as nicely designed, however it is priced far more in line with it's function and the materials used in it's construction.

whackoI agree that the price is just insane. I've got K80 Bauhaus carabiner on kickstarter, it's stylish, yet still I think it's overpriced even at KS price point.
I disagree about weight. Titanium has highest strength/mass ratio, that is, if you take a steel bar and a titanium bar of a same size, the steel bar will be stronger but weight will be bigger too. Now, if you take a bigger titanium bar to match strength of a steel bar, a titanium bar will still have less weight compared to a smaller steel bar. So, compared to a steel carabiner, titanium carabiner will have somewhat lesser strength, but much lesser weight.
And if you need simple carabiner, like the one in your link, there's much better deal - for roughly $23 you can get 3 titanium carabiners and a titanium split ring: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/ROCKBROS-Titanium-Ti-Bike-Bicycle-Hang-Buckle-Quickdraw-3pcs-Key-Chain-ring-Split-Ring-Size-L/2044934521.html

whackoNobody's making you buy this. If you want a "cheap" Ti carabiner buy that Titaner. I won't stop you. But the comparison is laughable. They aren't even in the same league. Design, materials, fit & finish... I could go on and on.
I could argue that titanium is stronger by weight than stainless (which isn't even the best steel alloy for carabiners), but it's clear that you aren't seeing the whole picture. Why would you even bring up steel in this discussion? Ti is king in EDC world.
There's obviously a market for these. Have you seen their Kickstarter campaign for this Handgrey model? Tell me, how much was it funded? Don't worry, I'll wait. ;)

DataGreat, feel free to never reply to one of my comments again as your ONLY reply is that whatever object is under discussion is worth whatever inflated price is asked for it because it is somehow better in some minuscule way you cannot put into coherent words. Keep in mind that this is a KEYCHAIN that is unsuitable for climbing, industrial or survival purposes. It is an affectation of ruggedness.
"Stronger by weight" does not mean that the actual object crafted from titanium is stronger than a similarly sized object made from steel. Aluminum is ALSO stronger by weight than steel, but no one ever makes claims that it is actually stronger when used for the same purpose.
Also who cares how much the Kickstarter campaign was funded? Nearly 7000 people pledged $55,000 to help a guy make a bowl of potato salad. Kickstarter isn't always the best indication of actual market value.

whackoBy the way, you do have some valid points, but here are some points on why these are worth it to Some people:
Grade 5 Aerospace titanium. This is a much stronger grade of titanium than those such as Grade 2, are much more difficult to cut, and also much harder on the surface finish, the other carabiner likely uses a cheaper grade.
Unique design: says it for itself, the Bauhaus and Handgrey series are both very unique in design for a carabiner, and the HG is especially functional for organising your keys, so they don't roll around the whole carabiner. I have a H3L (not in this drop) and use it everyday. I also have a P99 and K80, the P99 is cool for the unique single piece construction, the K80 I think may not have been worth it but the bottle opener is cool, I would've preferred a HG with the bottle opener for aesthetics and build.
Overall, if you buy a single Handgrey and use it everyday, then it's worth it, as that cost is spread out over a long period of time, whereas I have seen many less quality carabiners break really easily. As a novelty, its not worth it, but for functional beauty it is great with a unique design and top notch materials.
