The Sound On Sound review says, "an end-address, supercardioid dynamic mic". The description here and on Heil's site says it's cardioid. Can you clarify whether this is cardioid or supercardioid?
TheDGPInteresting question! There's not really a set definition of what makes something supercardioid vs. cardioid. Polar patterns also vary with frequency as well so some microphones may have a narrower pickup pattern at higher frequencies vs. lower frequencies. This is why you get off-axis coloration on directional mics because the frequency response varies depending on the angle of mic to source.
It's sort of a medium pickup pattern. A wide cardioid would have about even response across the front 360 degrees and a hyper or supercardioid would have a lot less. The PR30 seems to be somewhere in between.
nicpopeIs there a single null to the rear of the mic or are there two nulls at 45 degrees from the rear? The Heil site shows a single null in the rear. I'm just confirming that that's the case.
TheDGPShould be a single null. The tighter you make the front the more that rear lobe starts to jut out but in this case straight behind should be total rejection.
nicpopeIt's my understanding that supercardioids have the two nulls at 45s to the rear and cardioid have a single null.
