Product Description
Done in traditional Japanese style, this Higonokami friction folder features a design that dates back to the late 19th century. Made with a thick san mai white paper steel (Shirogami) blade, it has no lock Read More
I love this blade. It opens easily with one hand, cuts well, and is easy to close with the perfect amount of resistance. Never had a problem with it opening without my permission. I love how simple it is, easy to clean, and is a knife I love having in my pocket.
I would buy this knife again.
Overall impression? Better looking than functional
When flipped and the blade is exposed for use, this is quite an attractive blade. However, the flip-tab for this little guy is sharp and guaranteed to at least poke holes in any pocket it’s stored in, let alone unnecessarily gouge the hand that reaches for it haphazardly.
Now that Drop has offered the Gerber Ayako, it would be an attractive option to have this higonokami design executed with the refinements of the similarly priced Gerber.
If your aim is to purchase this as a piece of EDC, I would not recommend the product. However, if you intend to display this, or show off the coolest letter opener, then have at it.
Very rough although I do like the thickness and shape of the blade. I think the knife is suitable as a utility knife thrown in a drawer somewhere but I would not think of this knife as EDC or carry knife at all unless I am asking for injuries. I`ve got it tuned enough so that I can snap it out of the brass shell with a handflick but would not want to rely on this handmade detent as safe.
The knife is VERY rough. Pits in the blade and the thumb tab is of no particular shape and is rusted. Would be a good project to shape and polish. The fulcrum is a rivet so separating the blade and handle in not possible. It does not open easily and handle is really scratched up. Not impressed.
*Update* so I bought some sandpaper 240 to 3000 grit and went through the process of finishing the blade. If your looking for a small project to pass the time get this knife and some sandpaper. Totally worth the time and money. Upgrade to 3.75 stars.
One star for the product not being what was advertised.
Sold as White steel, marked as Blue steel.
As Blue steel, the price was only an average deal, not worth buying 2 like I did thinking it was a great deal for White.
I guess at least we're lucky it wasn't the SK version 🙄
I cannot at all recommend buying these knives from MD if you're particular about getting a specific blade steel.

As for the knives themselves: they're a bit rough, but that's to be expected for a hand forged Japanese knife in this price range, they would expect the end user to do any final finish work.
The brass is a bit scratched up, the shaping of the "flipper" is very rough, the spine of the blade has burrs, the edge is useable but I'm sure it can get much sharper.
Still looking forward to polishing these up and making them nice, but sorely disappointed that they weren't the ones we were told we were getting
Do you have a picture of the knaji that would denote white paper? Ive been trying to find it or at least an accurate translation of the markings on the knife and no luck so far. Thanks.
